I say they're one of the best. Not necessarily *the* best, but certainly up there at the top. there are a lot of people who feel they're head and shoulders above any other band, and I don't think that's true. That's why I say they're the best and also overrated.
Zep was the first to do what they do (did). They revolutionized the sound of rock. But they weren't the first to do that, and they certainly weren't the last. Maybe they spawned more imitators than any other band, save the Beatles. But there were many other artists who had as much of an influence, just not so overt. Bob Dylan, for example, changed the way songs were written, and BB King practically invented the guitar solo.
The thing is, while Zep did everything so excellently, they also did it spectacularly.
About putting the music first, I meant that there were no ego struggles when writing the songs. Nobody claimed ownership of a song, and prevented other input. All four guys were on the same page about making the best music possible. At least, that's how Jones described it.
The bass is what usually draws my attention, and Jones is one of the greats. I'd put him in the top three, at least from the classic rock era/genre.
