i'm going to bed as soon as the night-time pain relief drugs kick in. but for now...

gacked from thunderemerald:

List your top 5 favorite artists of all time, then write what made you discover each one and become a fan.
(1 and 2 are a tie, per-say, though they include/center around the same person)

1. indigo girls: if you've read *any* of this thing by now, or know *ANYTHING* about me, then you are saying "duh" right now. no surprise here. when amy ray and emily saliers play together, it's magic. seriously. words can not describe. everyone just needs to hear IG for themselves. these women have changed my life. and i'm not saying that in jest. my other favorite bands have not changed my life. not many things do change my life. but amy and emily have.

in 1989, i was just a shy 11 year old who didn't really like the pop culture things that my other 11 year old friends liked. a friend of mine gave me the indigo girls' self titled album, their first major record release. within moments of playing it for the first time, i was hooked. from that day on, my life was, in many ways, shaped by amy and emily. now, 17 years later, it's still very known that i'm one of IG's #1 fans. i've seen them live well over 100 times. aside from the obvious "i have all of their albums," i have a very extensive bootleg collection (many on tape, from the old school). and of course, i will regularly hop on a plane and travel 'cross country to see them. hey, i'm doing that this weekend - new jersey here i come. a + e = ig and together those women are indescriable!
favorite IG song (and favorite song ever, this song is my anthem... look at the title of my LJ!): "world falls"

2. amy ray: amy's 1/2 of the indigo girls, and is for sure my ALL TIME FAVORITE MUSICIAN EVER. aside from what she does with emily, amy has a thriving solo career. she has released two solo albums on her own label, daemon records. she also tours as a solo artist.

as for how i discovered her... easy, through the indigo girls. long before stag was released, amy started hinting a possible solo album. from the second she dropped those hints, i knew that i LOOOOOVED the idea. her solo work within IG is amazing, so of course her solo work outside of IG would be amazing too. i've caught her live as a solo artist on both stag and prom tours a multitude of times. i do have to give props to the volunteers (will lochamy, lester nuby, jody bleyle/tara jane o'neil), her touring band. they rock the fun patterned socks off me!
favorite amy ray solo song: "put it out for good"

3. nineteen forty-five: as i mentioned earlier, amy ray owns a record label. nineteen forty-five (hunter manasco, katharine mcelory, will lochamy) is one of the bands signed to that label.

after i graduated from college, i was bored and job-less. around that time, i was hearing a lot about a new band signed to daemon called nineteen forty-five. intrigued by the band's name (why nineteen forty-five? later i found out that it was in tribute to blondie's lead singer. she was born in 1945.), i decided to check them out. i loved what i heard. it was a rock/punk sound that i enjoy so very much. i was lucky to see some live nineteen forty-five while they were still touring.
favorite nineteen forty-five song: "aurora borealis" and "cordova" (tie)

4. girlyman: an awesome rock/pop/folk trio (doris muramatsu, ty greenstein, nate borofsky) from brooklyn, new york, girlyman is just soooo much fun!

during the indigo girls' 2004 (fall) midwest tour, they had a band called girlyman opening for them. i had heard good things from icyspook, who had seen them as a guest at an indigo girls show that summer. i loved them as soon as they sang the first note of paul simon's "born at the right time." i've seen them live several times, both with IG and on their own. they're coming to the west coast next month!
favorite girlyman song: "kittery tide" and "maori" (tie)

5. snow machine: this is katharine mcelroy's (of nineteen forty-five) solo project. it's just so poppy and so fun! i heart katharine.

i heard about snow machine through daemon records, and of course from knowing (and loving) katharine's work with nineteen forty-five. i have not gotten the chance to see them live yet (shuddup, peanut gallery! i need to form my own opinion), as they hardly ever play shows outside of their native birmingham, alabama. they did amy's EAST COAST solo tour with her, but i skipped all of the east coast shows, because i was doing her entire west coast tour. to this day, i regret that because i really want to see snow machine live!
favorite snow machine song: "birmingham" and "old tin roof" (tie)

snow machine, 1945, girlyman, amy ray, indigo girls
