I've got 9.3 installed
wooooo~~~t.
but, I'm sooo tired.
The Installer
It was quite nice, and rather fast for having to go through 5 cds. The installer estimated 2hrs, without online updating... Which seemd pretty close to accurate. YaST (Yet Another Software Tool - kind of like Control Panel - but it manages nearly all the software on the system, including the installation of the operating system) had a specific section that allowed me to choose alternative languages! I'm really please with that - I've got an IME now (btw: the "shift + space" short cut key was a BAD idea - I've hit it a dozen times in this journal already).
Online Updating - from within the installer
My reall troubles started with YaST Online Update (YOU = similar to Automatic Updates in Windows). YOU checked for updates, and found a bunch - including MP3, nVidia, and Kernel stuff. I told it to update everything (accpt the kernel, which had a warning that people in the process of installing their OS should wait until the OS has been completly installed before installing the kernel patch). All these patches (90, not counting the kernel) was going to take FOREVER to install - so I went back to Windows while the system downloaded everything.
About half way though the update (about an hour or so into it), my DSL randomly died for about an hour. I was so pissed - I wrote an offline journal to vent, but I'm not hoppping over to Win2000 just to post it now. I left SuSE running YOU, and waiting for a connection to be made - when the DSL did finally come back on, the updates went pretty fast - since (in Windows) I did a general pause of all the torrents in BitComet so they wouldn't all suddenly start up as soon as the connection activated.
The system restarted and booted right up. I was quite pleased. The system looked good, I could type in Japanese, and access the network.
Remaining Tasks/Tests...
There are a few things that I have to do -
1. get XviD and DivX files to play
2. make sure mp3s play
3. Figure out how to unmount my Cruzer (USB Flash Drive)
-- um, and I think that's about it. Once I get those remaing two things to work, SuSE 9.3 will be of my "Okay For Primary OS" stamp of approval. I'll probably keep using 2000 - but if I can convert to SuSE just a little, I'll be happy. I don't like using Microsoft products all the time - MS pisses me off too often for me to be comfertable using their software all the time.
