WTF?!

Okay, so I was caught a little off guard today when I checked /. today... Not only did I miss the "MacBook" announcement (the new Mac notebooks, powered by Intel Dual Core processors (called "Intel Core Duo")-totally sacrilegious) but also Mozilla launched Thunderbird 1.5 today! w00t!

So, I got a little carried away with the whole Mac thing (especially since they were talking about iPods too --42 million? That's a freakin' lot of iPods). I really like the MacBook concept, although MacBook is a stupid name, but iPod kind of sounds stupid too it's not as bad as MacBook. There were some rumors about people dual-booting their Mac (BTW: the iMac is also using Intel Core Duo processors now) -- however, Slashdot reports these as being false!

BUT, on to the important news - Thunderbird 1.5!
I've never been really comfortable installing software from source, but I'm getting used to it since I've started using Linux. It's not all that bad, but it can be a little confusing (and even intimidating) at times, especially when you aren't really sure what your doing -- and the directions seem too simple!

Directions for installing Thunderbird 1.5 (in Linux)
Other Platforms:
Extract the compressed archive and run thunderbird

Seems a little simple, doesn't it? Even looking through all the files that came in the tar, there wasn't anything that said to do more than that. The readme just directed me to http://getthunderbird.com/releases for information on installing the new version.

So, I did what I was instructed to do. I popped up my terminal, went to my now uncompressed installer files, and executed ./thunderbird. Seconds later, I was prompted to create a new email account.

Create A NEW Email Account!? What happened to my old accounts!!?? And why does this look so crappy!? Quickly, I aborted the create new account wizard and shutdown TB. I thought I must have made a mistake somewhere, and sure enough, I did... When I run software installers, I usually run them as root (if I trust the source) -- I'm still used to ol' Windows where installers would crash (and sometimes go BOOOOOM!) if you ran them without Admin rights... And guess what that did in Linux? It installed TB 1.5 to just root! No one else.

I clicked on my TB link, and sure enough, 1.0.6 popped up instead of 1.5... A quick shutdown of TB, redo of the installer (this time as user, instead of root) and a restart of TB prompted me with my good ol' TB that I remember, now version 1.5. I'm so happy!

# lj-update -user indigojake -profile
SO, after nearly a YEAR of using LJ (actually, it feels like I've been using LJ since the beginning of time) I've decided to do a bit of a refit of my user profile... Over the past year, I've added much to my profile, but I haven't taken much out of it, nor reworded much that was in there... I figured it was about time for me to fix all my typos and some of my grammar...

I've still left some of the old friends in there that have deleted their journals (lantern has a habit of deleting and undeleting his journals anyway) but I'll probably be getting rid of those too, and I've unfriended those people who have unfriended me (and have friends-only journals), and I've added some people that have friended me, and I have yet to friend them ~welcome to my world~ *evil laugh* ^_____^ I'm also thinking about playing around with my layout theme... It's been six months or so since I've changed it, and it's about time for a face-lift (but I'll save that for the weekend).

I've added a new user pic (deleted the Windows one that I never use) and a new "Is Love" banner. I also reformatted and updated my goals for Winter... It'll be interesting to see how they work out this time (I've included two "fuzzy" goals this time, along with my usual measurable goals). I've already done my "Exercise 4x a week" and "Read though the kana cards once a week" goals for this week already... Only 9 more weeks to go!!
