Just when I start writing a rant-journal, what I'm complaining about just happens to fix itself! Grrr. Well, in this case, the Amazon.com rant actually turned out well... They delivered my DVDs this evening-- Amazon said "The earliest it will be delivered is January 5, the latest January 9" I guess they did a conservative estimate. There was one little annoyance... And that was that while my DVDs were still warming up (they were pretty frozen from the transport in such cold weather), I took a brief look at them (not removing them from the case, just checking to see if they were secured or if them popped out during shipping) -- well, the DVD for season 4 had a nice big finger print right on it (on a two-sided DVD, that could be a problem) however, it faded by the time I was back from dinner. I also noticed several smudges on the other DVDs, but no finger prints.
But, now I have something else to complain about! Dinner at the Roadhause
But first, the original Amazon.com rant
[ rant ] Neither rain nor snow nor dark of night shall see these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds.
unless those rounds happen to coincide with "weekend" or "government recognized holidays." ~sigh.
My DVD bundled order was transferred from DHL/Airborne Express to the United States Postal Service... According to DHL, "Standard delivery within 2-4 business days" (which is what I pretty much ordered from Amazon.com, 3-5 day. But, then DHL adds on that if the package is transferred to the USPS, the delivery could take an additional 2-7 days! Which is a bit longer than the Amazon.com "3-5 day delivery" - even factoring in the weekend holiday, it should still be here by January 4-5, under the longest case scenario... But Amazon lists the estimated delivery at January 9 - which is just unacceptable! 3-5 day my arse!
Well, I'll just have to wait and see when the package is supposed to get here.

Soylent Green came in a CARDBOARD case! I so hate cardboard DVD cases... They are sooo damn stupid. Well, I suppose it's the DVD that really counts.
I should also note that Amazon.com didn't mention that the SeaQuest DVDs were two-sided! Grrr, but that's okay... It would have been nice to know that before hand though.
The Roadhause a local restaurant with a stupid name
Well, for Stephanie's birthday, my parents wanted to take her out to dinner at a restaurant of her choice... She was debating between The Olive Garden, which would mean a trip to Toledo, and The Roadhause (or however you spell it) which is in Adrian. Since it was snowing, and it was new years eve, she decided to go to the Roadhause, since it would be a lot easier.
Well, got there at about 3:30, and the waitress neglected to inform us that the new year's eve party would be starting at 5pm. Good thing my dad knew enough to call the day before and get that information from them, but it would have been nice if the waitress would have reminded us. At first, Steph, my brother, and my dad, stopped in a Walgreens, so mom and I got our seats. The waitress looked extremely annoyed with us showing up. Before we could even sit down, she asked for our drink orders, a pet-peeve of mine is being asked my drink order before I sit down (I don't even know if they are a "Pepsi" or "Coke" place until I can at least glance at the menu!)
The rest of the family showed up shortly after. Got the appetizers ordered: Souther Egg Rolls and Idaho Nachos (sliced potatoes instead of nacho chips). The waitress also decided to ignore some of us at points... Since there was just a hand full of customers in the restaurant, I would think she could have remembered to bring refills on the sodas. She also forgot to run my mom's and Steph's Club Kino tickets, they had to request it, and she once again didn't seem too happy about having to do that.
Most of this stuff is just a symptom of someone who's having a bad day, or just not too familiar with working as a waitress. But there was two big things that I found really annoying. The first was Steph's Kino stub. Steph believed that she won $10, and asked the waitress to run the ticket. The waitress took the ticket and walked over to the register. She then proceeded to come back and ask, "You just wanted your ticket checked, right?" To which, Steph acknowledged. The waitress then returned with a ticket in her hand and said, "I guess you didn't win anything." And started to walk off. "I guess?" WTF? My mom caught her and said, "We'd like to have the stub anyway." The waitress looking even more frustrated, made some side-comment that we didn't win any money and didn't need the ticket, but handed it to my mom anyway, and walked off without a word.
Mom being worried that the waitress either didn't know how to run the Kino machine or was trying to scam us was determined to ask the bar-tender to check the ticket. As she was getting up to do that, and as my dad was paying the bill, and as the waitress was returning with my box, we had a nice little chat with the manager... He decided to come over to our table:
"How you folks doing?"
"Fine..." my dad replied.
"Good, good. My paty's about to arrive, so if you could leave, that would be nice."
"We were just getting ready to. We're just checking our Kino and getting boxes."
"Okay."
First of all, the restaurant was still nearly empty, and there was just a family of four waiting to be seated, and the majority of tables in the non-smoking section (where we were sitting) were unoccupied. I felt like I was being pushed out the door by the management. So annoying.
And then mom found out what the deal was with the Kino... Apparently our waitress had cashed in Steph's ticket and ordered a new one. How the waitress managed to do this accidentally is beyond me... But Steph is keeping the ticket and is going to check the results on the Internet... Who knows, maybe this time it'll be a big winner.

Well, I think I shall now be off to fight with Linux to play my DVDs. ^_^
Why o' why is it so difficult to legally make a decent Linux DVD player... Grrrrr!
