5 music recs, or what I'm listening to :)
"The Reckoner" by Radiohead (
Listen on YouTube)
I've been listening to In Rainbows all afternoon. One of the only albums I have of any
band that I can say I like every song. "Reckoner" is a great summary of everything I
like about the album - the selective percussion, Thom's haunting voice, a bit more
acoustic than most Radiohead albums, and still those strange, beautiful electronic
sounds. It's a little heart-breaking that Radiohead won't be putting another of these
out ever again.
"Grounds for Divorce" by Elbow (
Listen on YouTube)
dilario,
tsukude,
queenmeshi, and
serenity_winner introduced me to the brilliance that is Elbow this summer, and I wanted to include here
for anyone who has not discovered them yet. This is the song that made me fall in love
with them. The lyrics are such fantastic poetry, wrapped in these slower drum beats
and grungy guitars. Just listen to it. I can't stop. I even got my mom hooked. XD
"Woods" by Bon Iver (
Listen on YouTube)
Another one I had on repeat for a long time. It's the same sort of electronic harmony/
distortion effect that Imogen Heap uses on "Hide and Seek," but the harmonies are
actually tight. This song grows from a single voice to an electronic chorus, all a capella,
and there is just something about the way it sounds that I can't get enough of.
"Skeleton Key" by Margot and the Nuclear So and So's (
Listen on YouTube)
This is a relatively new band to me, but I love Richard Edwards' sort of sleepy, melodic
voice. I like the the sort of fun beat to this song, and the lazy harmony. It reminds me
of a more upbeat and less folky, more indy pop version of Iron & Wine. But I like the
combinations of instruments that they play with. Have to look into them more.
"Puncture Repair" by Elbow (
Listen on YouTube)
I'm including Elbow again because they're just awesome. :) One of the things I love
is that Elbow has an equal selection of grinding, gritty rock songs and slower, more
contemplative and quiet pieces, but with the same punch and meaning. "Puncture
Repair" is very simple and short, but poignant and beautiful.
On a total side note, I finally put up more icons in
electricshoebox, with Inglourious Basterds, Across the Universe, The Office, and a bunch of stock. (/end self-promotion lol)
