Okay, I know that not every book can be an epic masterpiece. I get that. But there are some things that seriously irk me about the Legend of the Seeker series. Some of these qualities just irk me in books in general. For example, I am so sick of lines that read something along the lines of:
"When she looked at him, her heart broke at the mere thought of the pain this caused him...
When he looked over and saw the pain in her eyes, his heart shattered at the thought of the pain that his pain had caused her"
Alright, we get it, you are *so* in love. And yes, when you are in love it hurts you to see that person in pain. But every twinge of pain or discomfort being so strong it shatters you?? God, stop being like 14 year olds in love. And this series isn't some sort of YA book, either. There's some real sadistic and sexual shit goin' down. So, can we please get over all the heartbreak because your boyfriend has a headache? Thanks.
Also, typos. Who the hell edits these books? Fire your editor and get someone who pays attention to the details, that is what you PAY them for. I've skipped over so many lines and still caught an alarming number of typos. It annoys me. I expect at least one per book, but..it gets to a point that it is ridiculous.
The books are utterly predictable. And morbid. It is kind of ironic that I think these books are morbid after A Song of Ice and Fire series, where main characters get killed off in the blink of an eye...but at least there isn't some guy whose favorite interrogation technique is reading people's entrails WHILE THEY'RE STILL ALIVE. And all the sado-masochistic sex is just wrong. Also, did I mention the predictability of plot? Yeah. Main characters get in a shit ton of trouble (a lot) and they think they're going to die, and magically have crazy power and kill people because they are just *that* in love they can't stand the thought of the other person getting hurt. Move on to next set of trouble. Repeat.
One thing I loved about ASoIaF is Martin's ability to create a character that you absolutely without a doubt despise. Think there is not a single redeeming quality, and then all of a sudden you start to see things through their point of view, and you start to understand them. You can't help but resist, because, after all they've done some truly despicable things- and yet..there are redeeming qualities. So far, Terry Goodkind's characters are far too one dimensional. Good guys, bad guys. Bad guys rape children and are sado-masochists. Good guys save children from terrible things. Black and white.
Did I mention that the choice swear word is "Bags!" I mean, it's not even something cool like "Frak"
I guess I shouldn't complain. It's like 'popcorn fantasy'. A transitional series in between something better. Not everything I read has to be phenomenal, but maybe I should not read pulp type novels right after reading something amazing. I'm bound to be disappointed that way.
In other news...is there other news? Belt test on Saturday. I will hopefully have a pretty, pretty brown belt come Saturday. So, that's pretty awesome.
I need a new place to live. Mom and I are seriously getting on each other's nerves and I'm not sure how I'll make it until fall. This sucks.
