Piranha?

Lately I've noticed that Tabby puts her paw into her water bowl before drinking from it. It's very cute to behold but I can't help but wonder what she is checking for.

Some cats rather lick a wet paw than lap from the bowl. Maybe she's doing that??

Nope. The paw goes in, the paw comes out, the face goes in... you do the hokey-cokey etc etc.

Maybe she's checking the water level so she doesn't dunk her head. It's possible her eyesight's not so good.

Cats don't see brilliantly close-up come to think of it, I think I recall reading somewhere that their focal point is 2 or 3 feet away. That would explain it but I prefer the piranha theory.

Maybe you could get one of those hopping frogs, controlled remotely by a squeezy air bulb.

Yeah this is what I was going to suggest, maybe her close-up vision isn't very good so she is checking to see if there is water in the bowl.
