I ran my 5k, and failed to realize that it was a cross country race that I signed up for. (Whoops!) So. Running through forest trails in 39 degree rain...felt like I was flying during the downhill bits, especially since my shoes would slide through mud on the way down (that park wasn't really able to handle the water that came our way--our run consisted mostly of puddles and mud). Our time was really bad because we got lost with some other people in the middle, and there wasn't any race staff to direct us to the right trails. Oh well. Got some trail running shoes (that trail nearly destroyed my current running shoes, which were really meant for pavement or track running), and plan to hit some trails this weekend.
Also. I have a new fitness goal. Starting in the spring, after I can swim my mile (I'm almost there), and run 10 (hopefully; I'm still REALLY far away from that, ha!), I think I'm going to try picking up parkour. I've been into it since the first time I watched that video like almost 5 years ago, but I never thought I could actually do it. I probably still can't, and it certainly isn't the best thing to try to start at age 31, but oh well! It looks like fun, so why not? Also, if ever I need to escape from anything/anyone, this is the shit to know. :D
For you austin folks interested in learning this, I found this resource yesterday:
http://www.meetup.com/Parkour-San-Antonio/ Looks friendly and awesome. The nyc meetup doesn't appear to be as welcoming or as well organized. There are some other pk groups in nyc, so that meetup's not my only option, but the one that looks most promising is 15 bucks a "lesson." I won't start until spring (if I start at all), but at least I have until then to keep looking for a good place to learn.
