Is it really necessary for writers to kill of main characters that are part of a series? Couldn't they find some other sort of drama and direction?

I've just had a good cry over the latest case of this, which just makes me feel silly.

Are you talking tv series or book?
Because I read the final books in the Gunslinger series by Stephen King and I was totally verklempt by the end. In fact, I didn't finish the last book because that way, in my mind, nothing has happened to any of the characters yet.

Oh, definitely books. Bartholomew Gill did it (in his penultimate book before he himself died), and now Elizabeth George has done it. I read a lot of British murder mystery series (like those two) and get caught up with the characters after reading numerous books in the series. Both times it really surprised me. Effective writing, but that doesn't mean I have to like it! *sniff*

Go ahead and finish the book, especially the "extra" ending. It makes up for a lot, I thought.
