character's name- Jade Curtiss
series- Tales of the Abyss
character's age- 35
canon point- Right after the last event in the Contamination sidequest AKA just before fighting Van. Everything's been revealed at this time, and he sort of gets 'confirmation' on what Luke's fate will be. In other words, he's made peace with his past but is now fearing for Luke's future.
history-
Here there be spoilers. personality-
Jade is like an onion. There are many layers to his personality, and the more you peel away, the more he stings you. As far as most people are concerned, Jade is simply a Colonel in the Malkuth military who is unnaturally skilled with Fonic Artes; a person who expresses nothing but mild amusement to any given situation but will get the job done. A most interesting enigma, but one that most are glad to leave well alone.
Go a little deeper, and you find that Jade has a rather unconventional sense of humour. He can banter with the best of them, and is always ready with a witty comment, sometimes even edging towards cruelty. He loves to call himself an 'old man', despite being only 35 years old. You'll also find that he is scarily competent, and seems to know about everything. It's almost as if he had read the game script beforehand...
Deeper still, and you begin to find that his title of 'Necromancer' is well deserved. Jade is a very practical person, not one to consider morals when on the battlefield. If an enemy was at his mercy, he would not spare them, not even if they were a defenseless little girl driven by blind hatred. In fact, the 'Necromancer' title came from his experiments on fallen soldiers while he was still researching on Fomicry. Fortunately for the rest of the world, he had outgrown his complete lack of morals towards towards human experimentation.
Perhaps he finally 'cares' for you now, inasmuch as he can care for anyone. You'll find that Jade is very insightful, not only towards scientific matters, but also in matters of the heart and mind. He finds people easy to read, but don't worry, he's not one for divulging others' secrets. He might scold you or lecture you, but it's only because he cares. Otherwise, he would only mock you when you fail. Still, it might take a third party to point out this side of his personality before you realize it.
Finally, you begin to see that all the shields he put up are a tangled mess centered around his equally tangled past. Regrets over his invention Fomicry, over the death of Professor Nebilim, over his past arrogance...Fortunately for him, his journey with Luke had helped him come to terms with his past sins. He has emerged a stronger person, hoping to use Fomicry to help Replicas become more than mere substitutes. However, he still thinks that he cannot understand the meaning of death.
facts-
- He's mainly an offensive spellcaster, but he's good at melee too. Heck, the game paints him out to be good at everything.
- He has a spear hidden in his arm. Yes, in it. Don't blame me if he 'accidentally' skewers you if you bug him.
- His eyesight is very good. The glasses are actually a device to prevent the fonons in his eyes from going out of control and destroying him and everything around him
- Despite all his character development, Fomicry is not a good topic for casual conversation, especially if you're Mr Tenacious Cockroach Dist.

[Jade fiddles around with his piece of chalk, looking slightly uncomfortable. He sighs to himself.] Well, I suppose any leads would be good at this stage. Explaining myself is such a tedious thing though.
[Without another pause, he draws a neat, almost-perfect circle into his journal.]
Greetings, everyone. I am Colonel Jade Curtiss, Third Division, Malkuth Imperial Forces.
[A hint of wryness enters his tone.] Although I doubt many of you will recognize the title.
[His voice becomes more official, as if making an announcement.] In any case, I'm searching for anyone from my world, Auldrant. If you have any information, please, do tell this old man. Your help would be greatly appreciated. ♥
sample prose post-
Jade glared half-heartedly at the television in his room, sighing for what felt like the hundredth time.
"This is quite infuriating." He remarked, in a tone that was more appropriate for making idle observations on the weather, and not on something that had plagued him for the past few days.
Jade loathed the television. His unease had started from the moment he found that the infernal device couldn't be turned off, and only grew from there. At first, it was just a minor source of irritation, an ever-constant flicker of movement as he scribbled down his theories of what was going on (not with that too-short stub of chalk, thank you very much). Fortunately, he was used to working through distractions, with no small amount of thanks to His Royal Majesty, but even Peony grew bored after awhile. This, this was continuous, always dancing on the edge of his vision as he worked.
His suspicions had only deepened the first time he saw the smiley face on the screen with its ominous, slightly garbled message. The too-creative chaos that ensued afterward had done nothing to settle his unease. Rather, it grew and grew, until he felt that the screen was spying on him. An unreasonable conclusion, perhaps, but who knew what was unreasonable in this mad world?
Sitting back, he stretched, another quiet sigh leaving him. "Perhaps I should go for a walk." Jade mused, weighing his options. "It's still in the early afternoon, so there would be no animated architecture to surprise me. Admittedly, I don't know where to go, but the townsfolk have been helpful so far. The probability of finding a library is quite high."
Plan made, the Colonel packed his notes away, deciding to take them along. Perhaps he was being paranoid, but he had decided early on that one could never be too careful.
Jade glanced briefly at his room one more time, red eyes lingering on the television. A wry grin settled itself on his face.
"Besides, if I stay, I might end up using an Energy Blast on you." He told the television conversationally. "And who knows what consequences that could create."
The television didn't reply.
questions?- None so far!
