Non-traditional Resumes for Non-traditional People

I do some moonlighting creating what could be termed, non-traditional resumes for non-traditional people that have been able to assist them in making the transition from an "underground economy" type employment situation to a more main-stream job.

I do this by going over all the things [including volunteer work, hobbies as well as all sorts of artistic endeavors] people have been doing with their life adding the skills learned in their various jobs, etc. and repackaging the material so as to position the person for the new direction they are hoping to move in.

Take this example of a young man who is a member of a minority group, lives in an economically depressed area and has not really successfully interacted with the dominant culture. This was done by making a virtue of a necessity, speaking the "lingua franca" of the dominant culture and showing how various experience are analogous to that which a more main stream person might have.

In this way we pretty successfully turned him from a "scary, barely employed proto-thug who was educated in a government 'make work' program for 'at risk' kids" to a nice young striver that a typical middle-class middle manger could see as a possible employee. And this was done without making things up or giving the wrong impression.

As a matter of fact by showing the young man's actual interests in rap music and anime his character shows thru even more than in the "plain white paper" variety of resume. And that can only enhance the probability that he and an employer will find a successful fit.

EDIT: was just turned on to this cool website www.indeed.com that aggregates several job-search engines.
