The past few days have been blissfully uneventful. First time in ages.
I did manage to get some Christmas shopping done on Monday as planned. The shops were fairly empty and there were no hordes of people - hurrah! I did spend some money on myself in Waterstones where there was some reasonably priced fiction on offer (as
joysilence has also observed!). I came away with The Chrysalids, a book I've not read since Grade 9 English, and Revolutionary Road, which caught my eye thanks to its vintage style cover. In fact, there were a whole host of books by Richard Yates with similar 1950s styled covers. I have since discovered that there's a movie due to be released shortly based on the book. Huh.
(On reflection, I think the V&A Cold War exhibition has entered my subconscious, given my literary choices!)
Anyway, I finished The Chrysalids within two evenings, and was surprised how much of it I remembered.
After last weekend's garden tidy-up, I have installed a bird feeder. It's wrought-iron with lovely Victorian touches to it. It's a lovely thing really. I have put up a tube of peanuts, one of seeds, plus a seed table and a small dish for bathing purposes. I've had seen a male robin, but not many birdies appear to have come by yet. Perhaps it will take them some time to figure out there's a new meal ticket in town. Let's hope so.
I have also been catching up with
Mad Men.I started watching when the BBC was airing it, then fell behind, and stopped watching it entirely. I have since purchased season one on DVD, in anticipation of the BBC's broadcast of season two in the next month or two. On a pure visual level alone, Mad Men is a joy to watch - the clothes, the clocks, the furniture, it's shot beautifully. But it's not a period piece; It's a smart, complex drama too.
There have also been plans made to head to
All Tomorrow's Parties for the seventh time (though I've not been now since Christmas 2006). So far, it's very indie-tastic, but ATP is always entertaining and as there's a great bunch of people I know coming along it will be ace.
Now, I must go rescue the Pumpkin Pie I have baking in the oven.
