Ouch. It must be so hard missing someone who is standing right in front of you because they haven't yet become the person you need them to be. Poor John. He just wants his uncle back.

I wonder how much Derek felt the same way after he was sent back-- we are definitely given the impression that he wasn't as close to John Connor as Kyle was, but, all the same, he did know him, and there must have been moments when he just needed his leader to tell him he was doing the right thing, and all he had was this scared, hostile teenager who desperately wanted him to act like a parent, but he couldn't even handle that because he couldn't NOT see him as John Connor...

Agreed on all points. That seems to be the central tragedy of the Terminator universe. There are all these myriad connections, but no one is ever who the other person needs them to be AT THAT SECOND. No one ever has the whole picture, until it's too late :(
