I liked how you kept it awkward for both, him being a young man that (probably) hasn't been with a woman and her trying to keep him at arms length because she see's her self as a failure when reflecting upon his warning so many years ago.
I think either one of them would risk the chance if everything had changed and were different, as you wrote here. I mean, she took the chance and he went with it that night at the hotel in '84. I was hesitant but warmed up to Kyle reaching first. It compliments his character to do something when it counts and isn't inappropriate.
They have such reservations about how they feel for each other and what they should do about it, but they both don't hold back on other things that they mutually agree are more important than gettin it on lol --I don't mean to contradict what you wrote: Kyle Reese is the only man she ever loved without reservation. He will always have her heart. I like to think they'll love each other regardless of what changes in the timeline occur. But, them both being such good soldiers make it easy for them to cut off a lot of emotional dangers (not always, though).
“We’re going to get out of here, Sarah,” he says. There’s a promise in those words, an anticipation.
She looks up at him and nods, but it’s a lie. If they both manage to make it out of here alive, it won’t be the new beginning he’s hoping for. It will be the end. He’s a man now, one hell of a soldier. He doesn’t need her to keep him safe. And the only reason she knows she still has a heart at all is that it breaks every time she looks at him.
Ow. For me, this mirrors what happened in T1. Together, they can accomplish things. '84 Kyle got to Sarah and she took his word and they escaped the machine. They made love and that solidified their relationship and it made them much more determined to survive. Fortunately, for your Kyle, he survived their big day after love making unlike '84 Kyle and I wonder if that enters in your Sarah's mind about what it could have been like if Kyle had just survived in '84...
“I love you, Kyle,” she whispers. “I always have.”
Mhm. Sarah/Kyle 4life

That's exactly it for me. I'm really trying to find a balance with that, with Sarah still being Sarah and therefore a BAMF. But at the same time, she's really emotionally battered. She lost John (yeah, from his perspective it's been a few weeks, but from hers it's been almost two decades). She tried to stop J-Day and failed. She tried to find John and failed. She tried to fill his role and failed. So she's still one hell of a warrior, but there is something so beat down about her that prevents her from connecting with anybody, even Kyle.

Yeah. I went back and forth about that. But for the same reasons I listed above, I can't see Sarah being the one to reach out this time. She's lost too much. She's too damaged. But at the same time, she's also so desperate for connection that there's no way she could turn Kyle away. Anyone else? Yes. Kyle? No. And I think that this Kyle really knows that. He knows there's more of a connection between them than she'll ever admit to, even if he doesn't know why.

;) Oh, just wait. The saga of Sarah and Kyle in this story is far from over ... now if I can just find the time to write it.
