I'll be living and studying in Bangalore for ten months starting in the fall of 2009, and I was wondering if anyone knew of fire conclaves or groups that were centered in that area that are open to teaching. I'm not even sure if this is at all common in the area, I haven't been able to find very much information on it, but I've recently started ( Read more... )

I live in Bangalore and if I understand you correctly, a fire conclave is a place where you learn fire works??

I dont think there are places really that teach such skills. There are only communities which have traditionally been doing this. But if you could tell me something more about fire conclaves, I could offer to find. It sounds interesting.

They're basically just groups of people who share the interest of fire tricks and manipulations who get together to practice and learn from each other. They include fire poi, fire staff, fire swallowing and breathing, body tracing and close contact fire manipulation...many groups do shows, or are available for hire for entertainment or can be parts of circus'..
I'm from Northern California and there are several conclaves and groups, if you could find any around Bangalore, that would be amazing!
thank you!

Ah. Okay, this is as far as I know and I think I am right. Its just a traditional art that I gets passed on from father to son. They are usually nomadic people and are fast dying out. In and around Bangalore,I would say you have an extremely slim chance. They are slightly more common around Rajasthan. Usually perform during desert festivals and dances.
However, now that you succesfully managed to kindle my curiosity as well, I ll try and find out. But, in any case, even if you find such communites living in and around Bangalore, it is highly probable that they might teach or practice or that it is just unviable. But try we can.
Good luck.

Hi beaudarling, if you go to Goa and go to the beaches of Aramabol in the north you'll meet people. That would probably be the best place as they normally have a fire festival there every Dec-Jan time. I just missed out on it this year due to flying to Sri Lanka :(

Id also suggest taking your own fire toys out there with you as Kevlar is very hard to come by, whilst i was in Goa we came across alot of cotton-kevlar mix that only last for 2 or 3 burns!!
Saying that though the sat night market at anjuna(called aporas i think) youll be able to get some kevlar from a german girl called Ute.

other than that id suggest searching online for more info
good luck

thanks! I was planning on bringing some stuff but it's really good to know that kevlar isn't easy to find.
I'll definitely check those places out : )
