asp was 324098234 times better than i ever thought would be possible. if you weren't in the frady/hyde center, that's way too bad, since they are THE BEST PEOPLE EVER and aren't coming back next year, which makes me sad but at least i was with them this year. since i'm not going next year anyway it doesn't matter, but this year was so fun.
i could write for about ten years about the stuff that happened there, but i don't think anyone wants to read that. basically our work group (there are 200-something people from cohasset, which are then split into centers of about 40 people, which then are broken up into work crews of 7, who work on one house together) seemed really weird towards the beginning and we all played music on our headphones and didn't talk, but by the end one of our leaders called us her "new little family" and we were all hugging and crying. best group ever, seriously. god.
and also there is no way people from cohasset could ever imagine poverty without going on a trip like this or to a similar area somewhere else. seriously. the houses there are just unbelievably run down, and yet some of them are next to these huge mansions. but mostly it's trailers and houses like the one we saw that definitely was about the size of caitlin's living room and was propped up by cinderblocks, but where he'd run out of blocks he used a toilet to keep the house off the ground.
we stayed with another center from connecticut, which was too bad as they were all from the same methodist church and with the exception of about one kid they were all really scarily religious and close. like there was this brother-sister pair, and the brother was sort of in charge of the boys and the sister was in charge of the girls, and they ran around reading bible verses and singing and talking to each other. quite annoying. so we pelted them with water balloons and almost got asked not to come back, or something. i didn't actually throw a balloon so i didn't hear everything that happened. whatever.
also being stalked by the one semi-misfit boy from connecticut is not as fun as it may seem. long stories that i will tell you if i see you.
basically it was a really great time even though i haven't actually eaten anything in a week.
oh yes, though:
