Health Code Violations Will Not Be Tolerated

A restaurant on the city’s Magnificent Mile was ordered closed today after Chicago Department of Public Health (CDPH) inspectors discovered critical violations of the City Health Code.

Baisi Thai Restaurant, 900 N. Michigan, was shut down after Health Department inspectors discovered food kept at unsafe temperatures (including sushi found at 64 degrees), infestation by insects (over 20 live cockroaches in the kitchen and over 100 fruit flies in the kitchen and dining area), inadequate sanitizing of pots and pans, no soap and paper towels in an employee restroom, and waste water backing up from a clogged floor drain.

Further, the managers at Baisi Thai were ordered to discard sushi, tofu and sliced melon found at temperatures above 40 degrees.

“This type of situation is entirely unacceptable,” stated CDPH Commissioner Terry Mason, M.D. “This restaurant will not be allowed to re-open until its management has rectified the situation and passed re-inspection.”

Today’s inspection was triggered by a husband and wife who called 311 to report that they had become ill after eating at the restaurant last week.

The enforcement action was the 50th time in 2007 that Health Department inspectors have shut a food establishment for violations of the Chicago Health Code.

Representatives of Baisi Thai will have to explain their failures at an administrative hearing on April 19 and pay a fine expected to total $2,750.

Chicagoans who believe that a restaurant or other food establishment is operating in an unsafe manner are encouraged to dial 311 and report it.
