...millions of football betters screamed out in terror, and were suddenly silenced.
First off, I was in Las Vegas this weekend. The highlight was seeing "The Beatles: Love," but I will make another post about that. Maybe. Here I want to talk about one of the most bizarre, hilarious and painful experiences I ever had prior to seeing "Love" on Sunday night.
I bet $100 dollars on football. I stood to win $538 if three conditions were met:
1. The Broncos/Eagles game had a total combined score of more than 42.
2. The Jets/Colts game had a total combined score of more than 41.
3. The Colts won the game by at least 4.
For those that don't watch football: the Colts (my favorite team) have their playoff spot and position locked up and really had nothing worth playing for.
Except pride.
And history.
Because they had yet to lose a game this season and had the chance to do what the Patriots failed to do last-last season: have the first perfect season since the schedule was expanded to 16 games. Some sports writers wondered if the Colts would really go for the perfect season, since the team's management has been known to rest starters when playoff positions were locked, but with history possibly in the making, and having played all the starts LAST week, when there was also nothing worth playing for, it appeared the Colts were really going for it.
Then, part way through the third quarter on Sunday, up by only 5, the Colts' coach (apparently on a command from the general manager) pulls most of the starters. I was watching the games at the Bellagio Sports Book, and when a shot was shown of the Colts' backup quarterback warming up there was only what I could describe as a collective gasp mixed with very audible groans. Lots of people had money on the game. For the rest of the game, the network kept showing the Colts starting quarterback on the sideline, with his helmet still on, obviously begging to go back into the game. Every time he was shown, the crowd at the sports book would scream "PUT HIM IN, PUT HIM IN!" It never happened. The Colts lost by 14.
Colts fans and NFL fans have apparently been irate on the internet and on sports radio shows today. I would've been disappointed if I DIDN'T have money on the game, as it is, I can only sorta shake my head in disbelief with a goofy smile.
