Classic Wodehouse Illustrations, Part 6: "Aunt Agatha Takes the Count"

Dec 18, 2011 12:50

So, in the last couple of posts, we've gotten to see a bit of Bertie's family: Aunt Dahlia, Cousin Angela, the errant (and surprisingly aged, at least in Skidmore's illustrations) Wooster twins, and even Uncle George. But so far we have had only a brief glance at the dreaded Aunt Agatha. So let's have a closer look.

Why is Mill's Jeeves always in a most un-dignified posture? He looks like he's out in a winter storm munching on lemons.

Haha, that's a very apt description! He does look a little more . . . Jeeves-like in some of the illustrations I haven't posted yet, but it seems like in almost every one so far he's freaking out over some kind of offensive article of clothing.

Oh please post one of those! :D I'd love to see Mills!Jeeves looking Jeevsian.

Also, I think a good explanation for Skidmore's shifting Jeeves is the real Jeeves was all "I can't handle this. It's just not right. I'm taking this one off, you cover for me Ganymede!intern."
And Skidmore!Bertie was too busy looking sadly at his noble lip-caterpillar to notice the switch.

Good heavens, are cummerbunds really that long?? Or is this garment some relation to the 4th Doctor's scarf?

He listlessly hands the pearls back, his shoulders drooping slightly, his face sagging with the weight of all his years of hard and bitter experience. Holy crap, Skidmore, did you read these stories at all?

Oh man, I am laughing so hard! Also, I had the same reaction to fashionable Aunt Agatha. I, uh, bwuh??

I love angry!Jeeves. He's SO ANGRY. Just SEEING that wretched cummerbund fills him with unspeakable rage!

Mills!Bertie continues to be adorable.

I was surprised by the cummerbund too -- I didn't know they worked that way. I guess I assumed they just kind of hooked up at the back or something. XD

Angry!Jeeves will not rest until the cummerbund is not only off Bertie, but also destroyed beyond any possibility of salvage. As long as it exists, it will continue to enrage him.

"RAAAAAWR! JEEVES SHRED PUNY CUMMERBUND!"

"J-jeeves, are you quite all right? I, ah, I think I'll just step out to the club for a bit. O___O"

ROFL! Suddenly, Jeeves tears through his shirtsleeves and turns an awful shade of green...

I want to acknowledge to one and all that I despise Skidmore's Bertie. He is not *my* Bertie, not in the least.

Also, I hereby also formally request that Mills' Bertie and Raleigh's Jeeves meet somewhere and, erm, do whatever Bertie and Jeeves are wont to do. :P

I think all four of them should meet. I can just see double!Berties arguing over which of them is more "willowy" and "sylph-like." (Mills!Bertie. Totally Mills!Bertie.)

Raleigh's!Bertie's reaction to Mills'!Bertie/R.!Jeeves:

"But Jeeves, how could you! D':"

"I'm most sorry sir, but I did mention my distaste at the moustache. >_>"

M!Bertie: "...x3x~"

Meanwhile, Mills'!Jeeves is off somewhere planning revenge and/or being grumpy and Raleigh's!Bertie is going: "I could have told you that was going to happen... *sigh*"

Mill's Bertie is really such a darling, I just want to pinch his cheeks eee ♥ (the *flailing* when he's kissed too...! xD) Poor thing though, I hope his Jeeves ungrumps sometimes, even if it's never illustrated. Even so, his reactions are quite hilarious, I can't not look at that last image without laughing. He really looks at that cummerbund like it's something dead and rotting. :'D

Aline is way too pretty. She doesn't look like a girl who plays organ in a village church. She can sort of pass for it in the first Skidmore picture of her, but not in the portrait.

Mills' art on the whole is great, but I must say his Jeeves is too expressive. He's certainly entertaining, though. He looks like he's going to strangle Bertie with that cummerbund. :D

I want to tell Skidmore's Bertie to cheer up.

I'm surprised Aunt A is letting the maid sprawl on her couch like that!

Oh, and I keep forgetting to tell you, but I love your William Powell icon. So handsome!

Yes, Aline suffers from Skidmore's prettification syndrome. Too bad he didn't apply it to his dudes!

The Mills Jeeves is a bit over-the-top, but I kind of love him anyway. He's so hilariously incensed by Bertie's fashion faux pas. XD

Poor Skidmore!Bertie. He'd probably feel a lot better if he shaved off that terrible mustache.

Thank you! I adore William Powell. :D
