You can thank
marainsanity for inspiring me with her post
here. I didn't want to post-jack her so I figured this deserves a post of its own. I mention marainsanity's post because it deals with religion and atheism, two topics I have far too much to say about. And the link I came across (
here) is about politics and religion. Specifically the new (US) Capital Visitor Center.
Some republican Senator I guess was offended that "
E. Pluribus Unum" was noted as our country's defacto motto, and not "In God We Trust". Now, technically he's right (see the link for E. Pluribus Unum) but it smacks of pushing religion into politics (and in truth that is the Senator's goal). It is true that in 1956 the national motto was changed to "In God We Trust" by H.J. Resolution 396. It has been challenged but never undone, and only recently it was once again "passed" on its 50th anniversary, in what was a complete an utter waste of time (IMHO).
What really gets me on this is the constant pushing of religion into politics. We saw this with Prop 8 and the Mormons, we see this with the intelligent design nuts trying to push out evolutionary science (through local school boards or state laws), and we see it with those occasional ten commandment cases that pop up from time to time.
I guess I just can't seem to understand the mindset that wants to force everyone to follow the narrow belief system and view of what our country "stands" for in a religious light. But then I guess thats my problem, I can't and don't think that way. Its late and I could go on about this topic, but I'm going to stop now and go to bed.
