This is AWESOME. Author Patrick Rothfuss, who granted, I have never heard of before but will now likely buy at least one or more of his books, is doing a fund raiser for Heifer International, one of the world's best charities.
Heifer, in case you haven't heard of them, goes further than just supplying food and drink to those in need - they supply animals and other renewable resources to people who need them, and teach them how to take care of them and get the most out of them. So instead of just giving some milk to a family, they give them a goat and teach them how to milk it, so they can have milk for years to come, along with extra to sell to help provide income. And if the goat ever has babies, they can share the wealth around.
Anyway, Patrick Rothfuss has started a fundraiser for Heifer, where not only is he matching dollar for dollar to those donated, but for every $10 you donate, your name is put into a raffle for some seriously awesome prizes people have donated. Stuff from Patrick himself, to stuff from Peter S. Beagle, to signed copies of Dr. Horrible posters and Guild DVD's. Rumor has it Neil Gaiman is digging up stuff to contribute as well.
So anyway, I thought this was too awesome to not spread the word about. Please, go look, and go donate. And pass the word around - there are few causes, if any, that are as good or as helpful.
Edit: One thing of note - this only lasts through TOMORROW. After Dec. 11th, he's done matching, and the raffle is closed. So if you want something, go donate today or tomorrow.
