I'm not surprised it was both an unlikely choice and a younger actor. Slightly disappointed as I'd have liked to see an older actor with more gravitas (Patterson Joseph was my choice), but then us older geeks are not the primary demographic so I kind of expected someone like this.
However, I have enough faith in the Dr Who team in general and Stephen Moffat in particular, to give him the benefit of the doubt and reserve judgement till he's done half a season. A lot will depend on what Moffat has in mind for the role and the show, I suspect he's going to take it in quite a different direction (hopefully one that involves not flirting with every female that comes within arms reach tbh). It's a mistake to judge the new guy based on how he would fit in with the Dr Who that RTD and Tennant have created.
When Tennant was first announced I was fairly dubious, and like most people I was very non-plussed about Catherine Tate as a companion last year. But both turned out to be excellent despite my misgivings, so I'm clearly not much of a judge of these things!
