Summary: "No matter how many times I will it to happen," Yuuki mumbled- to the lightest of the felines as she rested her head against his knee, "it's not going to, is it?"[ RP based + unarchived ]
Harsh, was time- casting memories upon off-white walls, flickering shadows against plaster, and when everything was thought to be forgotten- like waves, they came crashing back. Never was he truly ready to face what had been taken from him, what he'd been left with, and what he'd been left without. Perhaps there was never a moment in which he had what most people took for granted within tiny grasp, but never was there a moment in which he didn't wish for it.
"No matter how many times I will it to happen," Yuuki mumbled- to the lightest of the felines as she rested her head against his knee, "it's not going to, is it?" smile was bitter against delicate features as his fingers grazed along the shell of deaf ears, smiling briefly as they flicked out of sensitivity. Mari was deaf- he could talk and talk, as he did, and she wouldn't be able to hear no matter how hard he willed it. What was his parent's excuse?
He wasn't surprised, and he wasn't entirely sure why it bothered him like it did. Why every year he waited for an 'otanjoubi omedetou' from the voices he hadn't heard in so long- he wasn't sure why it mattered.
Because alternatives in the form of an aunt and cousin were nice, but they couldn't double as replacements for what he hadn't the luxury of truly having. Perhaps they weren't the root of the problem- maybe the sentiment, or lack thereof, behind the action was what made the impact. Whatever it was, he was ready to let go of it- had been wanting to for years. But like tradition, this moment only seemed to repeat.
Gaze falling, he tapped against the hardwood floor of his living area- hard enough to cause a small vibration to gently startle Mari awake, eyes drooping open in a lazy motion. He smiled, scooping her up into careful hands- and with a press of noses, he spoke. "Nee, Marichan. You're strong, aren't you?" Normally, she would squirm at this point, uncomfortable with being held up for this long- but she seemed too exhausted to protest. Her ears flicked, falsely giving off an impression that Yuuki wasn't falling for.
"It must be a burden on you, but you always seem content. And even though the others are there to rely on, you never try to too much, do you? You're still so young, but you have good instincts," he paused, letting her back down to relax once more against the length of his leg. "Papa is proud, you know."
