Author's Notes: Yeah, this was spur of the moment too.

The unrelenting rain continued to fall as one lazy ninja sloshed through the Konoha streets back to the Nara Family Complex. He tried his best to avoid puddles upon his arrival, but the act became too strenuous and troublesome for this particular lazy ninja. Shikamaru had just returned from a C-Rank mission in the Land of Rain. Leave it to Naruto to make an otherwise mundane task into something "spectacular". This was the last time Shikamaru allowed the Hokage to assign him to a mission with Naruto, alone. Albeit, more people would be tremendously more troublesome. He sighed and looked up at the gray clouds shifting above him. They weren't quite ominous, but they weren't quite welcoming either.

Finally, his house was in sight. Immediately Shikamaru slid open the door and discarded his sopping wet sandals, unbuttoning his Chuunin flax and tossing his useless hair tie in the waste basket at the same time. His hair was soaked and he figured a good shower would do him some good.

"Mom," he called as he made his way upstairs toward his bathroom, silently hoping she wouldn't make any troublesome requests. "I'm home!"

"Shikamaru," his mother called back from somewhere in the kitchen. "There's someone here to see you. They've been waiting out back for quite sometime now. Best to go see them right away."

Shikamaru sighed again. This was exactly the sort of thing he really wasn't looking forward to when he got home. In a nice pace that many had grown to associate with Shikamaru, he made his way back downstairs and toward the back of the house. Who was it? Chouji? Kurenai? Sakura? It couldn't be-

"Ino!" he said without thinking, involuntarily suffering a sharp intake of breath. "W-why?"

She turned to face him and the first thing he noticed, aside from her current attire, was her puffy, red eyes. Her eyes were usually a gentle shade of blue. She'd been crying. But Ino never cries, he told himself.

Nevertheless, it only took him a fraction of a second to crush the distance between the two of them. Immediately, he examined her. Everywhere else she looked fine. There were no visible injuries and he couldn't see any stray appendages wrapped in bandages, so why the tears?

There were other aspects of the blonde haired girl he found strange though. Her usually pony tailed hair was now cascading freely down her back. She usual ninja attire was replaced with a subtle, dark blue kimono with a pale, pink obi wrapped about her slender waist.

"Ino," he finally said, satisfied with his check. "What's wrong? What happened?"

She faced him directly, her eyes were red with what looked like fatigue and sleep deprivation. She smiled a sad half smile. "I've been such a fool, Shikamaru."

His eye brows rose. "We already knew that, Ino."

Her smile widened, but only a tiny bit. It was good to know his frantic stab at humor could cause a slight change in her mood. She slapped him on the forearm weakly. "I'm being serious, Shikamaru."

He nodded. "What's bothering you, Ino?"

The blonde sighed a significant sigh and she hesitated with whether she was going to go on or not. Her gaze traveled repeatedly from him to her clenching palms on her knees. Finally, she locked gazes with him, her eyes resolute. "All this time I've been chasing after Sasuke. I thought that maybe if I became the best and the most beautiful ninja out there I'd be able to snag a guy like Sasuke."

Shikamaru could almost feel a blood vessel popping. Was this her great crisis? "Ino, if this is about Sasuke, don't you think it would be better if you spoke to someone like Sak-"

The blonde cut him off by placing her index finger upon his still moving lips. "I'm not done."

Shikamaru nodded again, albeit in a frustrated manner with his brows furrowed. He took it upon himself to remove her finger for her. "Go on."

"I've been blind, Shikamaru."

He regarded her statement, perplexed. "Blind? How?"

There it was again, her half smile. "All this time I've been chasing after Sasuke even though there's always been a perfectly good ninja standing right beside me."

For some reason, he felt heat rise to his cheeks. "Who is it?"

"Here," she said, her smile filling out slightly as she moved close enough to the boy in order to shorten the distance between their two bodies to mere centimeters. "I'll show you."

And with that short statement, her lips descended upon his own. She was refreshing, everything he'd dream Ino would be and more. Her kiss was soft and inviting. It warmed him like the heat of the sun and he felt his body reacting to her kiss. Shikamaru kissed Ino back with the exact same fervor. She allowed his arms to come up and tie around her waist, crushing her petite body to his lean one.

Finally, the kiss ended. Each participant struggled to catch their breath. Ino, now neatly straddling his lap, smiled down on him as she kissed him lightly on the cheek.

He hadn't noticed before. As if on cue, the rain had ceased and the sun was shinning now.
