Summary: Without him, they cannot win. Stepping back onto the field could be the hardest thing he's ever done.
A/N: Completely spur of the moment. I was lying in bed and it suddenly came to mind.
"Hiruma-"
"Don't speak. Just do as you're told," he said, cutting her off immediately. "Put my helmet back on."
His orders carried just as much weight as usual, but Mamori could detect a slight tinge of exhaustion flavoring his commands. He was tired. He was on the verge of breaking. Scratch that. He was breaking. He had given all he could give in order to ensure that the Devilbats made it to the Christmas Bowl and now he was giving even more.
"Hiruma..." she started again, but was silenced instantaneously by his cold gaze locking with her eyes. The look meant absolutely "No Shit," as he had once phrased it, and Mamori had no choice but to comply with his demands.
She reached to her side and picked up the once disgarded helmet lying on a bench next to his also disgarded gun. Taking a few moments to get herself together, Mamori idly wiped dust off of the helmet with her hand before presenting it to her disgruntled captain.
"Turn around," she said and he did so slowly, as if the movement was foreign to him. The girl winced. She was the only person he was comfortable with showing his weakness to.
Mamori placed the helmet onto his head and began fastening it all the while shaking uncontrollably.
And then, the tears came. "You can't do this, Hiruma."
"Fucking manager," Hiruma said, with his usual audacity. "I'll do as I damn well please."
"But-"
"And if they see you crying, they'll know something is up." Hiruma spoke with a reprimanding tone.
"I'm not crying!"
"That's right," Hiruma confirmed smoothly, a ghost of a smirk appearing on his face. "You aren't."
And with that, he stepped onto the field, carrying everyone's hopes and dreams on his back alone. So many things were left unsaid. So many things were left unsolved. He couldn't turn around, though. He couldn't face her, lest he lose his own resolve.
