Have you ever played any of the GTA games, especially the latest one, San Andreas? While explicitly and uncomprimisingly violent, the game is an incredibly well put together experience. In all seriousness, I would consider GTA an exemplary piece of video gaming art. And not all art is made for children.
I do like the idea of sandbox games, its just kind of a let down with the GTA series that you have this extraordinary concept (the world is yours and you can do anything) and it all boils down to drive by shootings, beating up/killing innocent people and hiding from police (though it is really fun to see how long you can evade the cops until the military comes in).
However those games are hard to find as I found out last week when the staff at Electronic Boutique had never evem heard of Europa Universalis III and half the already small PC game section was devoted to World of Warcraft's new expansion. The industry has become to much like the movie business; more about the money than the product.
I think its like anything. Niche movies have really exploded recently because of how accessible movie making has become (largely thanks to IMacs, me thinks).
The more "solid" the gaming market becomes, and the more accessible game making for next generation systems becomes, the more we'll see "niche market" games thare aimed at certain groups of people, outside of your typical 18-24 Frat boy demographic.
Just check this out and tell me its not going to be awesome:
