And You Know That for Sure

I'm slowly beginning to realize that my ability to enjoy bad entertainment ironically might not be as strong as I thought it was. Maybe it's because of my growing interest in making my own earnest stories, maybe it's because I'm a humourless bitch, but I've been finding myself hard to take even samples of absolutely bad movies when they're reviewed by snarky people.

Except I was able to laugh my ass off at this highlight reel of Clash of the Bionoids, a badly-acted English dub of Super Dimension Fortress Macross: Do You Remember Love?. It's probably because I'm the only Macross fan in the world who really dislikes the film, to the extent of not even settling for respecting it.

That is because I do not like the portrayal of the Zentradi in the film, characters which my interest in Macross hinges on. But I've always been aware of, and respectful towards, the main characters and their status and role in the series (except when Hikaru acts like a dipwad), and I think, even if I were into the main characters, I still wouldn't like DYRL as much as the fandom does.

Sure, I'd like DYRL to begin with, but still wouldn't see it as the crown jewel of Macross. Why? Because, while it looks nice, the movie would be tainted by the knowledge that the characters did more, were more, in the TV series. It's a problem with most compressed TV shows: film is just as strong a medium, but when you adapt a long series to it, there's the shadow of what else was done. Those missing moments are not filler. DYRL gives it the old college try by trying to rearrange the plot to fit a film's running time, but it still feels stripped down.

So, time for a petty swipe! I laugh at this horrible dub because I dislike the movie it came from. Whee!
