She fishes out a single 1 euro coin from her pocket, handing it to the impatient register. He takes the coin gingerly, waiting.

Feeling for the flower shaped coin, Ariadne is aware of how short the fuse is. She’s holding up the line and the old man on the other side of the counter starts tapping his foot.

She gives him a small apologetic smile, putting the cup of tea down and digging deeper into her jean pockets. She tries her coat pocket, triumphant smile appearing on her face when she finally feels the distinct shape of the damn coin.

“Here.”

She looks up at the voice and at the sight of a coin similar to the 20 cent euro in her hand.

Arthur gives her a slight smirk, pushing the coin into the old man’s hand.

“I had it, you know,” Ariadne says in a matter-of-fact tone.

“You didn’t have to pay for me.”

Arthur turns slightly, looking at her from the corner of his eyes, lips slightly turned upward at the edges.

“Right.”

If Ariadne didn’t know any better, she’d say that he was teasing her.

He opens the steel door of the warehouse for her, letting her walk through first. She walks past him but she doesn’t fail to hear him mutter something under his breath.

“You can always pay me back.”
