Re: Filled: Table Stakes. Arthur/Eames, WiP 3/? anonymous October 6 2010, 13:30:59 UTC
"What's with the betting?" Ariadne asks, around five months after Cobb has officially retired, only coming back for occasional consultations when Ariadne asks him very, very nicely. (Or when Arthur sends her to do so; he's not exactly a model for moral behavior, is he? Besides, Cobb owes him.)

"Just a fun way to pass the time," Eames says.

"And, I believe, a safe way to let Mr. Eames' rampant need for one-upmanship run its course," Arthur adds, which makes Ariadne giggle and Eames growl.

"By the way, Mr. Eames," Arthur says, grinning; "I will bet researching duty for the next month, that you can not, in fact, steal the key cards for the NIOR facility."

Eames grins at Ariadne and winks at Arthur. "And what do I get if I win," he asks, "considering that normally you can't make me do research without resorting to begging, and that you actually like it?"

Arthur hums. "What would you like to trade, Mr. Eames?" he asks.

"You'll take over my part of the cleaning roster for a month," Eames says gleefully.

"Done," Arthur says.

In hindsight, he should have paid more attention to Eames' glee. On the upside, when they have to set the warehouse on fire before leaving in a hurry two weeks later, the warehouse is clean enough that they don't have to spend time wiping prints.

"I'll bet you a cup of coffee and a scone that she'll make one of the levels a version of Paris."

"Done."

+++

"I'll bet you Mr. Caminzuli will hire us to go after Mr. Reletti, now. Cosmic balance and all that."

Arthur snorts. "Sure, and what do you bet?"

"Say, two weeks of dishwashing duty?" Eames tries.

Arthur grins. "No bet, Mr. Eames, and you should know better by now."

+++

"I'll bet you coffee for a week that I'll get through this level faster than you," Eames says, cocky and smirking. The PASIV needle hovers over Arthur's wrist as he considers.

"Coffee for a week to whoever gets through the maze first?" He repeats to reaffirm - he's discovered that when betting with Eames, it pays to make sure they're on the same page.

"Yep," Eames says. Ariadne rolls her eyes and pushes the needle into her wrist without further ado.

"Whenever you gentlemen feel up to joining me... and if either of you last longer than ten minutes in real time, I'll buy you both coffee for a month," she says, punching the button on the PASIV and heading under first.

Eames makes it six minutes forty three seconds before he's killed by way of guillotine. Arthur makes it most of the way through the maze before Ariadne's projections catch up with him. He's in there for seven minutes and fifty nine seconds before he is creatively - and literally - poleaxed.

Eames buys Arthur's coffee for a week, but they trade off on supplying Ariadne with her morning cappuchino's for the remaining three.

It's all fun and games until somebody loses an eye.

Or, in this case, it's all fun and games until Arthur ends up in a tight spot and makes a bet he shouldn't have made.

They've kept it small and simple, thus far; so Eames has every right to stare at him when he ups the stakes without any apparent reason.

"Harris drugged me with Somniacin and left me to wake up with the mark and his armed bodyguards, last time I worked with him," Eames says flatly.

Arthur winces. There'd been a nonspecific clause of 'never doing a job again with Harris' in the informal, never explicitly negotiated contract between Eames and the team. Most teams who stick together draw lines somewhere and make sure the rest of the members are aware where they are; it's the only way a team can function unless they're being run by a tyrant and neither Arthur nor Eames have any interest in dictating their little corner of the world.
