Arthur located the piece about pregnancy tissue karyotyping that he had broken off from in the early hours that morning and continued reading. He made his way through another four articles that regurgitated the same information and had just started one that discussed foetal cardiac activity when he heard the jangle of keys and the front door creaking open. He turned in his seat and was so surprised to find Eames wrapped up in his black winter coat and coming through the doorway that he couldn’t help “Oh,” slipping from his lips.

“Oh?” replied Eames cautiously, kicking door shut behind him. He was carrying two stuffed grocery bags and was balancing a ludicrously large and vivid orange pumpkin on hip and Arthur remembered that Halloween was in a few days. It would be the first one where he and Eames weren’t oceans apart.

“I meant, oh, you have a pumpkin,” covered Arthur lamely, knowing that not even the most understanding person took kindly to being told that their existence had been overlooked.

Eames sent him a small smile, and Arthur guessed Eames knew that he’d been forgotten about.

“Yeah,” said Eames and when he wandered into the kitchen he continued with a raised voice, “I bobbed down the market to get it and was told it organic and ethnically sourced. Bloody better be for how much it cost.”
