Cobb, Miles, Marie, and ten priests and priestesses made the trip to the Alter with Arthur, carrying torches to light the way. Arthur sat up on the sandstone alter when they arrived, Miles and Marie chained him to it. The chains weren't restrictive, they were only there to make sure Arthur didn't try to run away once he was left alone.
Everyone clustered around Arthur for a moment, touching his shoulders, brushing their fingers through his hair, until Miles looked up at the moon and declared it midnight. All of the priests and the priestesses turned and began to make their way back to the village, but Cobb stayed behind. He waited until the others were out of sight and hearing before wrapping his arms tightly around Arthur.
“We don't have to do this, Arthur,” he muttered into Arthur's hair. “We could leave the alter empty at the rising of the sun.”
“Cobb, no,” Arthur said, not moving at all, “that would be stupid. How would you gain anything by doing that?”
“I would gain you, Arthur,” Cobb buried his face in Arthur's neck and hung on even tighter.
“Stop, Cobb,” Arthur growled, “it's not worth it. You would loose so much more if you were to defy Eames. Think of all the people in the village who would die if you dropped into Eames' bad graces.”
“What if I don't care?”
“You should.”
“Why? Why should I give a fuck.”
“Those people trust you with their lives, Cobb. I won't let you betray them like that.”
“And what if I force you to come back with me?”
“Then I would kill myself the first chance I got. You would have to keep me constantly in chains. Provided you could force me to do anything at all.” Arthur's voice turned dangerous on the last sentence.
Cobb gave up, tears falling from his eyes to trail down Arthur's back. “I'll miss you, Arthur, more then anything in the world.” Cobb stood up straight and looked Arthur in the eyes. “You've been my best friend for what seems like forever, Arthur. I'll remember you every day of my life.” Cobb kissed Arthur on the forehead and ran his fingers through Arthur's hair.
Arthur swallowed hard and fought back tears. “Goodbye, Cobb. Fare well. I wish you every happiness in life.”
“Goodbye, Arthur,” Cobb's voice cracked. He pressed one more kiss to Arthur's temple and walked away. Arthur watched him until he could see him no longer. Then he stared out over the plain, waiting for the dawn.
