GEN or Arthur/Eames anonymous March 26 2011, 18:10:02 UTC
Arthur was an only child for most of his childhood, it wasn't until his late teens that his parents had another baby, a boy, a total accident (but loved of course). Whenever Arthur goes back home he takes his little brother, who looks so much like him, out to baseball games and other brotherly bonding things and it's awkward since they rarely see each other.

(and maybe Eames invites himself along in secret, sitting a couple of rows behind them at the stadium - though of course Arthur knows - and texts things like ~u 2 r adorable 2gther.)

Okay, so here it is! I tweaked things a little bit so I hope that's okay!

It was only the second inning and Arthur had already run out of things to talk about. He didn’t usually spend a lot of time with five year olds.

It had been two days after Arthur’s twenty second birthday when he'd gotten the call from his mother letting him know that she was pregnant with Henry. It was weird. Arthur had always wanted a brother, but at that point in time it wasn’t like they were going to grow up together. No sharing a room or fighting over who got to be which Ninja Turtle or who got the car keys on Saturday. There wouldn’t even be any hand-me-downs as Arthur’s parents had sold or given away most of his stuff ages ago.

And the truth was that with an age gap that big, Henry could have easily been Arthur’s own kid. That coupled with seeing him as little as he did often made Arthur feel more like a distant uncle than a big brother.

It was weird.

But Arthur loved him more than he really understood, so he tried his best. That was why he was here, taking his little brother to see a minor league baseball game and trying to bond.

He was just thinking about whether or not he had applied enough sunscreen to Henry’s nose when his phone buzzed.

U should have told me they'd perfected human cloning

Arthur made a face and scanned the crowd, quickly spotting Eames. That meant he had found him, and if he could so could others. Arthur was not comfortable with this at all and would have to make sure it never happened again. But luckily it was just Eames and for better or worse, Arthur trusted him.

He's my brother. And even if they did, no one would tell you. One of you is more than enough.

Eames wasted no time texting back.

ouch

but r u sure u didnt just go back in time 2 bring ur past self 2 a game?

Arthur sighed.

No

I mean yes, I’m sure.

Arthur felt like he could feel Eames’ laugh from across the field.

either way, u 2 r adorable

Arthur scoffed loud enough to earn a curious look from Henry and texted back.

JC, Eames. Stop sending creepy texts and just come over here. I can see you.

The stadium was far from full and the seat next to Henry was open. Eames made his way over to them but didn’t sit down right away.

“Hello, Arthur. And this is?”

Eames was smiling and being his usual charming self, but Henry was leaning away from him and into Arthur.

Before Arthur knew what he was doing he had picked Henry up and pulled him onto his lap, wrapping a protective arm around him. He was relieved when he felt Henry relax just a bit. It was a little awkward, but even though Arthur knew Eames would never, ever hurt a child, he was a dangerous man and Arthur was kind of proud of Henry for recognizing that. Plus, he’d be lying if he denied that small, warm fuzzy feeling he was getting knowing that despite how little time they spent together, Henry apparently still felt safer with Arthur's arm around him.

For his part, Eames took it in stride. He sat down, keeping a seat between himself and the brothers, giving Henry his space. Then he held out his hand.

“Hello. I’m Eames. It’s nice to meet you.”

Henry just stared at him and tightened his grip on Arthur’s arm.

“Don’t be rude, Henry. Shake his hand. It’s okay.”

Henry grabbed Eames’ hand and shook it quickly.

“Nice to meet you, too.”

Eames smiled, showing a crooked tooth, and Henry seemed to relax.

“So, Henry, do you like baseball or did your big brother drag you here against your will?”

“No, I like it.”

“Do you play?”

“I’m only allowed to play tee-ball. I can’t play real baseball until next year.”

“Ah, something to look forward to then.”

There was beat of silence before Henry worked up the courage to ask Eames if he played baseball, too.

“Me? No. I used to play rugby though.”

“What’s that?”

“A real sport.”

Arthur rolled his eyes, but Henry was intrigued.

Eames started explaining the rules of the game, repeating himself every time Henry asked a question. By the time Eames had moved on to the finer points of a ruck Henry had slid off Arthur’s lap and was happily seated between them, eating up every one of Eames’ words. Arthur guessed it was in part because Eames was actually talking to Henry like he was a person. He wasn’t using a baby-voice or asking Henry if he knew how to count to five or what a triangle was. Arthur was impressed.

Around the sixth inning Arthur was in the middle of a story about how when he was in Little League he insisted on keeping records himself because he didn’t trust the coach to do it correctly when Henry tugged on his sleeve.

“I’m hungry.”

“Okay, hold on.”

Arthur opened up his bag and pulled out a pb&j, an apple, and a juice-box. Arthur didn’t care if it was tradition to eat hot dogs at baseball games, he was not letting his little brother eat one of those things they served here.

As soon as he had finished, Henry was tugging on Arthur’s sleeve again.

“Now I have to use the bathroom.”

Arthur stood up and took Henry’s hand.

“Okay, come on.”

Eames watched as the pair made their way down the stairs, noticing how Arthur took it slow, swinging his arm as Henry jumped down the stairs and shortening his stride so Henry could keep up with ease.

The game wrapped up quickly enough after they returned. The home team won and all in all it had been a pretty successful outing. The parking lot was surprisingly busy for as empty as the stadium was though so Arthur picked Henry up and starting carrying him on his hip. Henry did not approve.

“I’m not a baby.”

“I know, but that doesn’t mean these people know how to drive.”

Henry made an angry face but wrapped his arms around Arthur’s neck and set his head on his shoulder none-the-less.

“Fine.”

Arthur knew Henry would protest, but he also figured he’d give in. Even at five, what kid doesn’t like to be carried after a long day?

When they reached his car Arthur turned to Eames.

“That was...”

“Yes, it was. So I’ll call you in...?”

“Three days.”

“Right,” Eames said and then changed his focus to the boy in Arthur’s arms. “Well, it was lovely to meet you Henry. You keep an eye on this one, all right?” Eames said gesturing to Arthur.

Henry nodded.

“Good. Cheers then.”

“Bye,” Arthur and Henry said at the same time.

And Eames was gone.

“I like your friend.”

“Yeah. I think I do, too.”

Henry gave Arthur a slightly puzzled look. Arthur just smiled at him.

“Come on,” Arthur said as he set him down and fished his keys out of his bag. “Let’s get you home.”

SO LOVELY, OH MY GOODNESS. I want to snuggle with this fic, as bizarre as that may sound, sorry. Thank you for sharing this, anon! It was so freaking adorable (aw, little kids are gorgeous) and I loved the muted, subtle interactions between Arthur and Eames in the car park.

(sorry, deleted post was me failing spectacularly and replying to another unrelated story)

Thank you all so much for the lovely comments! I'm really glad people enjoyed it. <3

And don't tempt me, anon #3! It would be so easy to wrap myself up in this fuzziness and write pages and pages about them building forts together or Henry trying to bake a cake for Arthur's birthday but then remembering he's not allowed to use the oven so in the end he needs Arthur's help and has to ruin the surprise or one day Arthur sees Henry rummaging around in his suitcase because he wants to dress like Arthur but Arthur is like, "No, you have art class today, you'll get paint all over your nice clothes. But we can do your hair." So he shows Henry how to do his hair like his. But then he goes to pick him up from school and it's all messed up and so Arthur asks what happened and Henry says the kids made fun of him so he tried to fix it. Arthur is highly offended by the children's inability to appreciate an economical hairstyle, but then remembers how much his product costs and thinks economical is the wrong word but the kids are still dumb. But then he remembers this isn't about him, it's about Henry and it's probably one of those 'teachable moments' so he's all "You shouldn't care what other ppl think. If you liked it you should have kept it." and Henry is all "I know. I'm sorry." and looks SO SAD and Arthur is all alsjdlfasd because he just wants him to be happy and not get pushed around but he just looks so disappointed in his little self and Arthur isn't sure what to do and okay I'll stop now. :X

I'm not anon #3 but by all means, please, keep going anon, if you want! I for one would voraciously and gladly read more of Henry and Arthur (and Eames?) :)

Arthur is all alsjdlfasd because he just wants him to be happy and not get pushed around but he just looks so disappointed in his little self and Arthur isn't sure what to do

I WANT THIS SO MUCH, somehow. Kid!fic makes me terribly happy with the world, especially when it involves such delightful interactions between younger and older siblings.
