CHARACTER INFORMATION
Canon Character: Skulduggery Pleasant
Series: Skulduggery Pleasant Novel Series
In-Game Name: Skulduggery Pleasant
Age: Unsure, but claims to be over 300 or even more-most likely more.
Gender: Male, presumably.
Ship: Formerly on the 4423 (pronounced as four-four-two-three), now on the Silvana
Position: Ex-Passenger on the 4423, currently Strategist of the Silvana.
Appearance: At first sight, Skulduggery cuts a most mysterious and enigmatic figure, wearing a tan overcoat over a formal wear of what resembles a plain white business shirt (complete with a nice velvet red tie) coupled with black loose dress pants, an oversized black fedora hat (with a wig of frizzy dark brown hair to boot) that shields over the pair of sunglasses that he wears over and the dark maroon scarf that hides the lower portion of his face. He also wears gloves (plain white, made of inflammable cloth) over his hands, and black boots for footwear. All in all, it’s a suit that hides his whole figure-and for good reason too, since Skulduggery is essentially, under all those clothes, a skeleton held together by magic.
Being a skeleton, Skulduggery stands a bit taller than most average people, although he weighs very light for obvious reasons (though he can make himself seemingly heavy via magic) and has a naturally lanky appearance. He doesn’t really do much to hide his ‘condition’ (if one could call that), and when he’s finally discovered, will not really bother putting back his disguise-he only does so so as to not frighten people at their first meetings,
Personality: Skulduggery, under all that mystery and the bizarre appearance that he decides to go about with, is something of a dapper gentleman. He talks in polite yet old-mannered way of speech, in a notable smooth velvety voice that more often than not enraptures the attention of unsuspecting people. He is also a flamboyant egotist, vocally exalting his own plans and showing off his magical abilities rather often, not to mention that he is particularly enthusiastic about detecting, always sleuthing and looking about for clues-a habit that more often than not usually lands him into some trouble. He is also a clever strategist, the plans he makes (when he does indeed have a plan) usually noted as sudden and unexpected in many ways and easily pulled off well to confuse his opponents.
However, under that suave demeanor hides a deep desire for revenge. He has, on several occasions, remarked himself as a ‘dark and twisted thing’; as he had died hating Serpine, it was that very hatred that brought him back and binds him to this world, thus that forming part of the core of his very existence as of now. Also, having gone though the brutal loss of his whole family (wife and child) to his foes, Skulduggery has become very sensitive to the loss of others, particularly his close ones such as his friends. He accepts the fact that sacrifices must be made at many a times, but still he is highly reluctant to allow this to happen, and will do all that he can to prevent that from happening.
Abilities/Weapons: As a powerful sorcerer, Skulduggery is what people can term as an ‘Elemental’-one who has the power of manipulate the four basic elements of Air, Fire, Water and Earth. He relies quite heavily on his magic to defend himself, since he can’t do much physically for obvious reasons. Per se, his brand of magic not more of a conjuring type; rather, it is one that manipulates the substances around him, such as shifting air or condensing the water vapor around him. His more favored form of attack though, would be summoning fireballs and throwing them endlessly like a hail of bullets from a machine gun. And due to being a skeleton (and essentially undead), he doesn’t have to live by the basic needs of humans like food and water, and can go quite well without them-although admittedly, Skulduggery does miss the ability of being able to do so from time to time, but he’s gone past that stage quite some time ago already.
Also, due to his natural interest (and also talent) of investigating, Skulduggery is easily assumed to know very well about the world as well as the more notable people such as the current high-profile figures in Ivona such as von Karma or Edgeworth, and even the young captain of the 4423. However, he does keep what he knows as a well-guarded secret, and there are still things that can slip beneath him without his notice.
How well can your character hack?: With three hundred years of being here, Skulduggery's got a sharp mind and can learn things quickly. He's been around since the journals were created and managed to get close to the machines on many occasions, so he's actually quite the hacker (and partly because its part of his job, since he is after all a private detective). He lurks quite alot in journal space, although he only takes notes of things that catches his eyes and on people that he's interested in - anyone else that falls out of his radar are usually left untouched.
Weaknesses: Being a skeleton, Skulduggery is quite obviously lacking greatly in terms of the physical department; his body as it is held basically by magic alone, although it is also because of this magic that still allows him to feel pain, particularly when his bones are rattled. As mentioned earlier, his fondness of snooping about has gotten him into quite a lot of sticky situations, some of them having turned out pretty badly at the end as well. Another point to note is that Skulduggery has a great tendency to risk his life for people he has close bonds to, as he is very sensitive to the loss of others after having to witness the butchery of his wife and child. His rather questionable and (in)famous reputation also precedes him-working as a detective, Skulduggery has made himself quite a number of enemies, and there is a chance that anyone of them might just make their own move, given the nature of (most of) his investigations.
And then, there’s also the thing about his name. Skulduggery Pleasant is not his real name-it is known as his ‘taken name’, a name that Skulduggery bequeathed upon himself. The taken name seals up the weakness of his ‘given name’-that is, the name that he was given by his parents at birth. Usually people who know his given name would be able to exert some form of control over him, but having a taken name has since covered that weakness, although he still keeps his given name an information he’d rather keep to himself. Then there would be his ‘real name’; the name that was given to him naturally. Knowing this, one would be able to exert total control over him, from his thinking to his emotions and even his actions, even with a taken name in place. However, Skulduggery has no idea what his real name is, and quite obviously, neither would anybody.
History: To track back Skulduggery’s origins, we have to go back to quite sometime ago, long ago where Ivona was recovering from the revolt and Vohemar only at the bare beginnings of its formation. At that time, there were a notable number of what people could call sorcerers or magicians-people and other sentient beings capable of wielding powers called magic. Most of these people, however, were hidden within the country, having their own separate society (complete with their own business and government) while intermingling with the one that everyone else lives in. Most of the ordinary population was unaware of this second world, and those that did know of it usually did well to keep mum about it-after all, a world as bizarre and fantastical as this was almost impossible to believe until one saw it for themselves.
It was during this time of turmoil and unease where there was an evil sorcerer named Mevolent gathered an army under him and had tried to take over the world-or at least the world of magic first. As all such stories went, there was a resistance movement that stood to oppose him. Skulduggery, then still very much alive and human, was one of the several leaders of this movement. His natural talent and skills in the Elemental magics had enabled him to fell many of Mevolent’s followers, thus earning him an infamous reputation amongst his foes.
The war started and dragged on for several years, and more did his reputation grow as the battle went on until Mevolent’s second-in-command, Nefarian Serpine took matters into his own hands to utterly break Skulduggery. After much scheming and plotting, Serpine managed to get to Skulduggery and his family, first killing his wife and child and then Skulduggery himself. Serpine’s followers then struck his dead body on a pike and burned his body for all to see until his corpse was nothing but a pile of bones. After this display, his bones were all gathered into a bag and tossed into one of the raging rivers of the land. This grotesque display greatly crushed the morale of the resistance, and one by one the other leaders fell, the war soon seeing its end with the evil forces triumphing.
But Skulduggery’s spirit did not move on. Bound by his hatred to Serpine and the desire for the good to win, Skulduggery somehow manage to get into the bag of bones, re-enter his bones and somehow quite literally pull himself back together as a skeleton. With his return, morale returned and with his aid, the resistance was finally able to defeat Mevolent, all of his minions imprisoned or rehabilitated-Serpine included. And just when his nemesis was at his mercy… then came the Truce, signed between the magical government and the former followers of Mevolent. With the truce, Skulduggery could not do anything to Serpine, a fact that haunts and torments him even until today.
So unable to do anything else, Skulduggery turned to his interest-investigating-and became a detective, but has never lost his hatred and desire for revenge upon Serpine. The years came and passed, the world changed and the seasons flew by-and before he knew it nearly three hundred years had passed in the blink of an eye. He watched the many events of the past unfolding before his eyes, unrecorded events in history playing out before him but left forgotten by the ravages of time. He learned much, watched as the Ivonaian government stumbled into corruption and so much more.
Then in the present, a bit over three hundred years since the end of the war, where the flagships of the two governments-the Victoria II and the 4423, plus the ever-notable mysterious theater ship that always charms with its interesting plays, the Winding Way all fly high in the skies above. Tensions are high in this day and age, and it did not help when the peace talks in Kropmork were ruined with the deaths of the delegates of the two nations. Upon seeing this interesting (and most intriguing) piece of news, Skulduggery’s interest was greatly aroused, sensing the possibly of yet another investigation about to happen.
Following his interests, Skulduggery then chanced upon the Winding Way and the 4423 in Berum; after some consideration, he guessed that it would be more interesting to be in the heat of matters rather than away, and thus chose to board the 4423 in hopes of knowing better on what was happening between the two nations. After consulting the first mate (as the captain was away), the detective went upon the ship as a paying passenger, in hopes of solving this most intriguing mystery.
Later after the sudden crash on the Bandlands and the whole bomb fiasco, the 4423 edged to Trewe for repairs. It was there where Skulduggery heard about the tales of the enigmatic Silvana and the strange mission of its captain. His curiosity piqued and himself intrigued about this whole 'organization', he bade farewell to the crew of the 4423 in Trewe and headed all the way to Abantiare, where the ship was docked. After some brief negotiations with the first mate, he was accepted upon the ship as a Strategist, this time with hopes that maybe this ship will help him solve this mystery.
Little did he know he would get more than he bargained for.
