I'm probably too tired to think in entire sentences, so I'm going to to with bullet points tonight.
- Earlier tonight I went to the Chicago Idealist.org Graduate Degree Fair for the Public Good. Despite some initial setbacks finding the hotel (hint: Look UP) and parking (hint: just pay for the freaking parking garage instead of trying to find a meter), I had a pretty good time and I'm really glad I went. I'm feeling much more motivated to do something with my life and plan to start applying to programs relatively soon. Erm.. wait. I need to take the GRE first. So... I'll be working on that. and THEN applying.
- My favorite programs of the night:
- The New School's MA in Media Studies or Foreign Affairs. The guy at the table was SUPER friendly and helpful. I was a pretty easy sell though considering the New School was one of the first schools I looked into for grad school. However, I'm not exactly sure it has what I want/need from a program. That's not saying much, however, because I am not exactly sure what I want in the first place.
- Georgetown's School of Foreign Service: Arab Studies, security studies, international affairs, human rights etc....
- SIT graduate programs
- Peace Corps
- Tomorrow/today at 11am I have a meeting with one of the heads of volunteering at Cantigny's First Division Museum. I'm not really quite sure what this meeting is for except to conduct a background check (I'm assuming they need a signature or something, because I'm pretty sure I don't actually need to be there for that). The background check is pretty much a formality, considering they've already asked me about specific programs and events I want to volunteer for, I know I'm good to go. The lady said that she was going to introduce me to the people at the research center and archives and basically show me around the place.
- I'm really excited to volunteer here. I think its going to be a lot of fun and a very valuable experience.
- I'm equally excited/proud of the fact that I am doing ANYTHING at all besides going to work, reading, watching TV, and surfing the internet.
- Speaking of reading, I'm currently working on David Rakoff's Don't Get Too Comfortable. Its a REALLY interesting book that I found while perusing the sociology section at Borders. I was surprised to find it in that section because I only know Rakoff from This American Life. I assumed he would be in humor or something. Anyway, this book is about the culture of over-consumption in America. It's smart, witty, and very thought provoking. He also uses a lot of big words that I would like to know the meaning of.
- Since moving my afternoon dose of adderall up to no later than 3 pm I've found that its much easier to fall asleep at night (but not VERY easy... its still hard for me to fall asleep before 1 or 2 am)
- We have a new General Manager at Borders. Its kinda exciting. She seems very nice and knowledgable. I think she's going to do a lot of good things for the store.
- I need to call a lot of people back. A LOT. But I haven't yet and I don't know why.
