i was pretty excited when one of my friends told me madrugada
http://www.emi.no/madrugada/front.asp was playing in berlin. i'd known them for a couple years now, and was hooked from the moment i heard their first album. their style is seems to me to be influenced by the nick cave/leonard cohen types with many of the songs being crooned in a very heavy deliberate and sultry style.
i was hesitant going into it mostly because i used to listen to them alot with someone with whom i now have a very circumscribed emotional access to. i was lucky tho... they were quite busy flogging their new album... so, while they did play a few older songs, much of the set consisted of stuff i had not heard much yet.
the end result?
i wasn't so impressed. perhaps they were just tired. musically they were pretty tight but the lyrics were sung kinda flat. gone was the trademark sensuality that got me in the beginning.
it was still a good concert... and if i'm here i'll probably see them again when they come back in a few months... but next time i'll try not to have such expectations.
reminds me of a soul crushing massive attack gig a year or so ago... but in fairness, they were in your face horrible. like... "we have your money already. you can't get it back. listen to our sample machine. go home now." did anyone waste their money on that concert too?
