a world away
hoya/dongwoo ; g ; romance, slight angst
In which Dongwoo dreams of a life where everything is bright and sunshiney and Hoya promises him just that.

a/n: Inspired by this amazing AU meme. Go check out all his (yes, his!!!) memes. They are all amazing and asbkjdbvkr.

“Don’t you get tired of this sometimes?”

Dongwoo’s question throws him off guard. Hoya fixes the gun strap around his waist and fidgets restlessly, staring at his partner’s wide eyes. He doesn’t know how to answer the simple question, really.

“I. I don’t know. Maybe?” he says lamely, and Dongwoo looks down to his hands, playing with his knife. The blade catches the harsh artificial lighting hanging above their heads, bouncing off to Hoya’s retinas.

“I’ve been thinking… what it would be like if we could live without - without killing people. If we could live freely and sleep peacefully everyday without guilty consciences and a price over our heads,” Dongwoo says again, eyes staring straight at Hoya’s, as if pleading him to understand. And Hoya does, really.

“I just… wonder if we could have a normal life.”

Something gets stuck on Hoya’s throat, momentarily blocking his access to air. “Like…?”

Dongwoo waves a hand airily. “Oh, you know, waking up at seven to go to work at nine, go home at five. Cook black bean ramyun for dinner. Laze around on Sundays,” he counts them off with his fingers and Hoya realizes with a pang that Dongwoo’s been thinking about this for a long time. And then he looks up, a huge, bright grin on his face, a little blinding like the sun.

“Hey, we could even go on a date to the park together!”

Hoya stares at Dongwoo’s happy face, chest tightening. His voice is small and weak when he speaks again. “Yeah. Yeah, we could.”

“And go cycling together! You know, on those double bikes?” he continues, waving his arms around excitedly. “And go karaoke and dance in the streets!”

Hoya doesn’t answer and after a while Dongwoo’s bright grin fades to a small, sad smile.

“But we’ll never be able to, right?” he asks, humorless laughter falling from his lips. Hoya turns away to put on his leather jacket.

He promises to himself to give Dongwoo the life he’s always wanted. One filled with sunshine and cooking ramyun and dates at the park. In this life or the next, doesn’t matter. He will anyway.

Hoya closes his eyes and prays for it to come true.
