As a post script, I should say that my gran's new television comes with a 190 page manual that is only available on CD-ROM. My gran has no way to view it. Luckily she had us to set up and calibrate the television, but most lonely old people, for whom the television is their only companion, and who would be forced to buy a new set in the event that something befell the old one, wouldn't have any information on how to set their new television up. Even the auto set-up feature the television booted up with only located three analogue channels, all of which will have vanished by this time next year.

I expect there are people who would set it up for her, if she'd risk calling a stranger from a television company up to visit her house, which she wouldn't. And I expect those people charge a hefty fee for plugging in an aerial and pressing a couple of buttons on a remote control. People aren't just being left behind - they're being trampled by the march of technology.
