This might be a silly question

But, how many of you here knit? I know that I am an avid, and by that I mean I have two sweaters, three pairs of regular length socks, two or four(I honestly can't remember) pairs of knee or over the knee socks, a few hats and a few pairs of mittens and a lace shawl on the needles, as well as a skirt or two, and more bobbins on my four spinning ( Read more... )

big girl knits is great for a jumping off point. i cannot for the life of me remember the other book i have- one of the sweater pattern books that helps you calculate a bit better than that- the big book of sweater patterns? maybe that's it. right now my knitting books are a bit hard to get to- we are in the middle of trying to rearrange my massive amount of fiber, bot spinnable and in yarn form and books and wheels and tools, so i can't put my hands on them right now, but i find that one to be much more helpful than big girl knits. elizabeth zimmerman's books are also great for adjusting things on the fly and coming up with your own patterns since her books are geared more towards finding a stitch you like, figuring out you measurements, gauge, and the style of whatever you are knitting(as is the series of books i am talking about) plugging it all in, and poof, instant pattern. i love those series for that, and find them infinitely more helpful than a book of patterns that also has a few bits dedicated to helping you sort of size patterns up for you.

one book i love for socks is knitting vintage socks because it gives the basics for a bunch of different types of heels, toes and the like, as well as ways to alter the patterns to fit your foot, and then gives the patterns, which can be easily altered to fit a bigger calf, foot or what have you. they are also patterns for sock garters, knee socks and directions for making the calves of the socks smaller or larger as need be, and for adjusting for different yarns and gauges, and well as the history of sock knitting. to me, that is a major bonus, as i am a bit of a history/textile history geek, so i find the time line and all of the pattern histories fascinating. i could go on and on about favorite pattern books, but i am currently knitting a cabled cardigan/coat out of viking patterns for knitting which is a book that is much more of an intuitive pattern book- the translation from norwegian to english is well, a bit rough to say the very least. i am lucky enough to own the book in both languages, and read enough norwegian to be able to make up for the poor translation into english, and to be honest, if i were not able to do so would have thrown the book and the project across the room in disgust many times by now. as it stands i have had to start over now twice because i missed an important implied direction that was not clear in either book, but now that i have got it i am sailing along and hope to have it done to wear next fall. it is a huge project, and one that i will probably work on in between other ones, but right now i am hoping i might get it done in time for the state fair next fall!

Stefanie Japel (Glampyre.com) is just hosting an online course in how to fit knits to yourself PERIOD. She says it's not a design class, but more of a "fit" class. Her classes are getting A+ reviews and I own her book and a few of her personal patterns and have always been very happy.

And yup, I'm a knitter too:) I'm on ravelry under erinleighralph!
