...its a day for learning...

all of the sudden, I got this really weird urge to download a bunch of Rai (pronounced like 'Rye,' but means 'Opinion' in Arabic, and is also used as a slang term to kind of mean 'Oh Yeah!') Music (an example of highly influenced Rai music is 'Desert Rose' by Sting f/Cheb Mami, only without Sting)...and here is what I learned.

-Rai is a mainly Algerian "folk" music, street developed sound, that was originally outlawed from being played on the radio...because it was considered 'low' music, and it also would talk about the political unrest that was going on around them.

-mainly, its a mix of Arabic music and some influences from European, African and American drum beats, and the newer stuff is even being remixed into House and Trance music.

-it has found a lot of popularity and influence in France, and a lot of Rai music is mainly in French, while dialectual structures are often used throughout the songs that are popular.

-The term "Cheb" (ex.,Cheb Mami, Cheb Khaled, Cheb Jalal, and Cheb Hasin [who was assasinated by extremists for his political singing])
is often used in the front of the names of Male Rai singers
(it was mostly a male song style, even though it uses a lot of the same ideas as female chanting within Arabic music)and it means 'Young Singer' and there are other terms for Older male Rai singers, and a different term for female Rai singers.

I should try to learn things more often.

Cheb Mami is kinda hot...
