making lists and cross things off / i'm an old believer

this week i crossed some big names off a big (though increasingly smaller) list, namely: mogwai, yo la tengo & okkervil river and I suppose I've now seen all 3 of the dirty three play at some point (now if only I could see them play together) and I'm happy to say, I can only hope I get to see them all again, especially mogwai...now I remember why I obssesed over them for so many years.

now the above was all on a theoretical list that, I'm sure I've written down on some scrap of paper or in some draft email or something, but if, in some bizarro world, I wrote down a list of the obsurd, wonderful things I could only dream of happening, but likely wouldn't happen 'cause its kindof random and weird....well my other random, random, random encounter of the weekend would go there: singing the chorus of kennel district with kevin drew and spiral stairs.

I know I obssess over alot of bands and say alot of bands are my absolute favorite (i.e. the dirty three, julie, mogwai, etc, etc....they are all my abosulte favoritess, I'm never lying/exagerating) but pavement tend to make it on that list often, so being able to see spiral play some of those old classics was cool enough, but seeing it in a tiny legion upstairs bar, with no stage and a bunch of broken social scene dudes joining in was amazing enough...and then when all hell broke loose and kevin grabbed me and couple buddies to sing, I really have to say - it was pretty, fucking cool.....and really, really does re-enfore my delusional belief in diy indie rock music/community as such an important, wonderful, unifying thing (at least to a couple generations of skinny, awkward, middle-class kids)....and considering how stressed out I've gotten over promoting/playing too many shows recently (which were in some cases, pretty incredible - i.e WOMEN..wow...what a band), while spedning many late nights and stressful days writing/recording/co-ordinating finally get a proper record together, that, in part at least, is turning into a bit of a love letter to that scene...it was a pretty sweet, much needed reminder of what all that stupid shit means to me.

I am indeed, an old believer (no matter how much trouble that may get me in some times)

ps. I also was introduced to Ira and Georgia of yo la tengo. they are absolutely lovely folks.
