Historical randomness.

I've read a bit of Axis Powers Hetalia last week - you know, that manga about anthropomorphic versions of countries everyone's up in arms about lately xD- and can I just say that the abundant Hungary love pleases me to no end?

And today I find this secret on F!S.

Well yes, Hungary's awesome! :D

And more. )

I love Hungary and it is awesome! I toured there with my band and our Hungarian friends The Derkov Bois. I thought it was a wonderful country, and the countryside and small towns were as pretty at Kiki's Delivery Service. I got on very well with the people there even though I have no Hungarian (apart from a few insutls the Bois taught us on the minibus) and lots of them had little English. And it's a good thing to be pessimistic and critical of your leadership (maybe that's why us Irish got on well with the Hungarians we met!)

I remember you mentioning that you did a tour here, which is awesome and I'm glad you had a good time! :) I think Irish and Hungarian people do get along very well - must be the common love for drink and loud music! :D I had a fantastic time in Ireland too a few years ago, and when I visited the UK in November, the best night out I had was in an Irish pub in Birmingham - the people were so nice and of course they really know how to have fun! :)

I only read up on Hetalia because I heard that we are featured as well and it made me curious. The shipping doesn't do much for me, but the strips are cute and amusing in a self-mocking way. xD

I confess I've always been curious about Hungary because my Dad's family is from there. He grew up speaking Hungarian because his grandparents and that generation (they all came over to America) didn't speak English very well. None of them were very keen on the place (hence, they came here to the US), but they were fiercely proud of being Magyar. They came over between 1900 and 1905, and Hungary was still paired up with Austria then, so maybe that had something to do with their feelings.

Elizabeth (Erzsebet, but of course they Americanized it) must have been a really popular name at the time: both my grandmother and great-aunt had it has their middle names. So did my other grandmother!

I'd like to see the place someday, land of my ancestors and all that. You don't here much about Hungary over here. Before I married, I used to get asked about my name (Szabo) a lot and most of the time I had to explain where Hungary was.

It's very interesting that your family emigrated this early in the century - the biggest emigration waves happened before the second World War and after the revolution in 1956, understandably. Actually they say that the years between 1900-1910 very times of peace and prosperity for the Austro-Hungarian Empire, but if someone has been very patriotic/involved in the revolution in 1848, I can imagine them having beef with the Austrian influence. :)

Erzsébet was indeed a very popular name in the last century, it's considered a bit "old" now, so not anymore. I don't even know anyone in my generation (20-es) who has it as a name.

Oh, Szabó, that's indeed a very typical Hungarian name! :) No wonder people asked you about that. Most people in far-away lands don't really have an idea where we are, but well, such is the fate of small countries. :)

Yay, Hetalia~! It's my latest actually not so guilty pleasure because it combines some of my favourite topic (history, slash, crack, cute guys...) so nicely.

The fact that it seems to be the new big hate topic on F!S is a bit puzzling to me though. Makes me want to go there and say "chill out, people, It's just a silly little manga, no real nations have been hurt in the process of making it...". But then again, i've never really understood the appeal of F!S.

Finally a post by you where i've got half a clue what you're talking about!XDD Hey there, how's it going?^^

F!S needs something they can hate on, but I find the hate overblown as well. It's not supposed to represent anything accurate, it just takes world history and twists it a bit. yes, sometimes it's offensive. It's called satire, people.

Haha, well yes, I've pretty much strayed from anime/manga fandom - can't even remember when was the last time I watched anime anymore! - but I'm fine. Doing well, will be finishing university soon, hopefully leaving for Japan after that - all that jazz. :)
