From my Thailand Lonely Planet, emphasis added:

Songkran Niyosane Forensic Medicine Museum. Holy gun shot wound, Batman, this grisly museum will efficiently separate the aspiring doctors from the reluctant patients. One of seven medical museums on the hospital premises, this one's claim to fame is the leathery cadaver of Si Ouey, an infamous Thai ( Read more... )

That place sounds fascinating. I didn't realize how many places there are with medical curiosities. I went to Walter Reed's museum years ago, but I think it's closed to the public now, since it's on the grounds of the working military medical campus.

Well, to be fair, I've only listed three; the two I mentioned in Washington are more of the touristy sideshow believe-it-or-not variety of places (although Ye Olde Curiosity Shop has two excellent mummies). However, I think there are probably more medical museums out there, it's just a matter of doing some sleuthing to find them.

There's a book I read for a class at Pitzer called Heaven's Harlots, by Miriam Williams; it's an autobiography of her 15 years in a cult. As I recall, it was pretty interesting. I could lend it to you when you come out, if you want.

"God's Family"? that's what the back says, I don't remember, although I have a dim memory of her references to The Family.

I think Giant Robot did a short quarter page feature on that Thai museum not too long ago. I don't know if Lonely Planet mentioned it, but it houses countless manequins including the man with the largest testicals.

I also found this on google while looking up the various stages/levels of Buddhist hell. It's like if disneyland had an adult karmic edutainment portion.

The Mutter Museum is pretty cool. Let me know if you need any info on getting to or staying in Philly.
