Catty

My cats were sent to me via airplane on Wednesday. I rented a car, bought new cat supplies, and drove to the airport to meet them. I then had the fun of wheeling two carriers marked "LIVE ANIMALS" past the folks waiting at the baggage claim. Several people caught sight of my cargo and exclaimed, "Awww, kitty!"

We haven't lived together in two and a half years. I was tentative about re-entering the world of cat ownership; I honestly wasn't sure if I would be as enthralled with these two as I used to be. Still, I don't believe in buying animals and abandoning them shortly thereafter, so I vowed to stick with them regardless of how I felt.

They were understandably skittish when I got them home. Neko (gray and white in the icon) started exploring fairly soon, while Daniel has chosen to remain under my bed for long stretches of time. Yet it's clear that all of their fear is directed toward the new location. They still know me, still respond to me when I speak to them, and still want to sit on my lap whenever it is available. Their presence is extremely gratifying and quite calming. I think I might be better as a cat owner than I was at the age of twenty-two, when I first got them. I am much calmer, more sensitive to their needs and not as easily provoked by their antics. The fact that they still have a connection with me after all this time is humbling. And yes, I am still enthralled with them, although not yet to the extent that I once was. That might actually be healthy.

Also, they are funny as hell. Thus, I will close with a short list of places in my apartment where one can find cats.

- Daniel: squished into the four-inch-wide space between the old-timey radio and the wall, facing the wall.
- Neko: on top of the refrigerator.
