Will had asked Magnus to marry him and she'd said yes. It was the next day and Magnus hadn't changed her mind and Will hadn't changed his mind (not that he thought he would change his mind, obviously, but he wasn't chickening out) so he was pretty sure this was a sure thing

Most afternoons, Kate's not at the hut but she's been feeling a little...something since she saw the kid jumping off the swings the other day. Someone else had caught him so she just kept walking. But something about the costume and the size had tweaked her. It might've been Thad or it might've been the son she and Will had in that other world, Magnus, but she's been staying a little closer to "home" the last few days. Sewing. Reading. Running.

After training with Steve today, she'd headed back and now she's sitting on the back porch with a pile of shells, some wire, some fabric and her sewing crap. She's not sure what she's making yet. Just something.

Will didn't see anyone out front, so he decided to cruise around back before actually knocking. Bingo. "Hey," he said, forcing himself to actually walk instead of skip like some kind of damn dork. "Making something?"

The sound of Will's footsteps is so familiar, Kate doesn't even register them until he's close enough to see what she's doing. She frowns, the huffs a soft snort at him. "No. I'm sorting through my crap for donations to Good Will." Duh. "Why do you look like the Jays just won the World Series?"

He'd tried to calm down the giddiness, but he must not have done a very good job of it. Oh well, he hadn't really tried too hard. "Because today is a day that's about as good as it gets without, you know, the Jays winning the World Series."

Kate's eyebrow lifts and she answers, "Yeah? You find some magic mushrooms or some X, Willmeister, or did someone open up a door to home?" She's glad he's happy but something about how he says it has her spine straightening.

Will counted off on his fingers. "No, no, and also no," he said, and flopped down on the porch beside her. All of a sudden he was kind of nervous about actually telling her--why?--and he brushed his palms over his jeans. "I, uh, kind of asked Magnus to marry me."

There's a flip in her chest before it goes tight and a whole lot of thoughts she just shuts right the fuck down. Her eyes light up instead as her elbow hits his ribs. "Way to go, Willmeister. I'm guessing since it's better than the Jays winning, she said yes."

She is happy for them. Really happy. No one deserves that kind of happiness more than Will and Magnus.

He laughed, rubbing his palms against his knees. "Yeah, she said yes," he answered. He hadn't been a hundred percent she would, especially since he did kind of a crappy job of asking. "So I guess we're engaged. She doesn't want to do a whole, you know, froufrou wedding thing." This was fine with Will, because it meant he didn't have to dress up, not really. "So we're just going to go down to the council office and make it official."

"That's great." Kate grins, even though her chest still hasn't stopped that bullshit tightness. She knows why. All the reasons. She's ignoring them. "But I'm never going to forgive her for taking away my chance to mock you for the tux." She's not asking if she's invited, either. In case the answer's no.

"I'm sure you'll get to mock me for something," Will said, and nudges her with his elbow. "You'll be there, right? It's not a big thing but we want you and Declan to come, if you want to." Kate and Declan yes, but Will had drawn the line at Tesla, no matter how long Magnus had known him. He wasn't going to put up with being mocked and belittled at his own damn wedding, even if it was a pretty casual affair.

Her chest finally loosens a little. Not as much as she'd expect, but enough that she can easily ask, "If you're not dressing up, do I have to?" If she does, at least she knows what she's making now.

"You can wear whatever you want, as long as you're there," he said, and it was only a little bit teasing. The Sanctuary was his family, and however many of them he could have there, he wanted, because this was the kind of thing that was all about family, wasn't it?

Kate thinks about teasing him, but in the end she just smiles her way through a little shrug. "Wouldn't miss it for anything." For people like her and Will, kids from broken homes, the streets, foster care, getting married's kind of...well, scary as fuck and also the best thing ever. Family of his own, for real.

She leans over and kisses his cheek lightly. "Besides, someone's got to give away the groom and I'm the only one qualified to do it." Because of the thing they never talk about.

For a second, when she kissed his cheek, Will thought about that thing they don't talk about, that other life Magnus told him about. It wasn't so much about any might-have-beens or could-have-happeneds so much as was about knowing they would always, always have each other's backs. "You can absolutely do that," he said, draping his arm over her shoulder and squeezing.

That knot in her gut twists a little tighter. For a second, she's right back to the day she got here. Seeing Will when she thought he was dead and Kate wants to grab hold and never let go. It's stupid, but if he marries Magnus, then...

Then nothing.

She leans into him just for a few breaths. "Come on, give it up. You just want me there to punch Tesla if he objects."

Will snorted. "Oh no," he said. "Professor Hidden Agenda's not invited. Just you and Declan. I don't care how long he's known Magnus, I'm taking one day off from listening to his crap." It was probably best not to even tell him there would be a wedding; the asshole would probably just crash it for the hell of it.
