This birthday weekend has been incredible. Granted, I had to work on the actual day of my birth (Friday), the ensuing night out made it well worth it.
I was treated out to a lavish dinner at the Macaroni Grill (which, since it seemed good enough for a wedding rehearsal dinner, was damn well good enough for me), and given my presents. I received two cute Old Navy polos (sadly, in a size too small to fit comfortably). Since I managed to already get them BOTH dirty, it would be just of me to keep them, but I think since I was given a gift receipt for them, I'll pull a good ol' exchange for them tomorrow--or rather, later today.
Anyway, my next gifts were in the form of visual stimulation--and I don't mean a lap dance or porn. I was given the Indiana Jones trilogy DVD set and RENT: Filmed Live On Broadway.
Lastly, my night was rounded off by being bought a total of three Bruised Pears at the Surly Wench by my various friends. Cheyenne's adult daughter Rose even went so far as to buy me two disgusting lemon-flavored shots. It was in a REAL good place that night.
Though, not intentionally so, Saturday was a restful recovery day. I had wanted to go get my hair cut and have a potential buyer come look at Mina, but no one ever came around. So I ended up having lunch with Devon and Kathy at C. I. Chu's and did laundry.
Sunday, however, was my favorite. After having slept in comfortably long enough, I met the roommies at Jerry Bob's for a late brefixt. We were waiting on a couple of more people to join us to go the Renaissance Festival, but one ended up dropping out at the last minute. Then we were late in getting ready and out of the house. Much to my discouragement, we ended up arriving at the Faire at 3:00, and it closed at 6:00.
Nevertheless, I made the very most out of it. I bought a couple more Bruised Pears, bought this lovely new pentacle pendant and had my first turkey leg, Renfaire-style.
The shows were brilliant. We saw this whip-master who was very entertaining and quite handsome to look at too. He even went so far as to showcase his final number (where he wielded two flaming whips at once) shirtless.
We also caught the last jousting match of the day, in which we had the good fortune to have our guy win.
As geeky as it be of me to say, I must admit that seeing all those wonderful period costumes made me wish that I could be a part of that. More than joining a Renfaire community, I felt a longing for a past in which the faire evoked. Granted, I'm well aware of the truth that life in the Middle Ages wasn't all Huzzahs and men in kilts (by the way, I had counted 26 different ones in total), still, I felt a connection and a draw to it that may be difficult for others to understand and appreciate.
As we left, I declared that next time (probably next year), we'll leave earlier in the morning to come and we will have to come in evocative costume, which means kilt time for me, OH HELL YES!
Anyway, here is a picture of my souvenir that I purchased myself at the Faire:
