Season Finale, Part 1: I Love Being Here With You
Some dreams never go away. They linger in our minds and hearts long after we believe they should. Even when we think we've forgotten them or have moved on or accept that they are lost to us forever, these dreams can suddenly reappear, unexpected and unbidden, fully-formed in all of their splendor. And we realize with a start that they never truly left us in the first place. They were merely hidden, lurking in the shadows, waiting for the right time to reassert themselves and the right place to avail themselves to us again. This, of course, begs the all-important question. Will we be brave enough to step up and grasp the dream this time? Or will it slip through our fingers yet again?

“Tricia!” Kyle stood at the bottom of the stairs, exasperated. “Come on! We're gonna be late!”
“I told you I'm coming!” Tricia shouted. “I'll be right down!”
“She's been saying that for fifteen minutes,” Kyle muttered. “What takes her so long?”
“Girls take a long time to get ready in the morning. It's one of life's mysteries. Get used to it.” Owen smiled as he set his tablet on the coffee table. “My flight is on time. I have to stop by the hospital briefly and then I'll head to the airport. All of my flight information is here,” he said, gesturing to a legal pad which was on the couch beside him. “And I've listed Cristina's phone numbers as well, just in case you need them.” Owen stood up as Tricia finally descended the stairs in a rush.
Hurrying over to him, she gave him a big hug. “Have fun in Zurich! Say 'hi' to Cristina for us.”
“I will,” Owen said, nodding. He turned to Kyle. “Look after your sister while I'm away.”
“I will, Dad,” Kyle replied, as Owen gave his shoulder a squeeze.
“Good. You can call if you need me. Having said that,” he added, his eyes twinkling, “emergencies only, please. You are very capable of handling the day-to-day stuff on your own. I have complete confidence in you. And I'll check in every few days. Grandma Hunt will be here when you get home tonight. Please be helpful and respectful. It's really good of her to stay with you while I'm gone.”
They looked at him reproachfully.
“What?” Owen asked.
“Like we're not going to be nice to Grandma,” Tricia said, rolling her eyes.
“I didn't say you weren't. I'm just reminding you. That's my job,” Owen said firmly. “You'll be fine and I'll be home before you know it.” He paused as Kyle tapped his watch. “I know. You've got to go. Have a good day at school. Drive safely. I love you.”
“Love you, too!”
“Bye, Dad!”
They smiled and waved as they headed out the door, backpacks slung over their shoulders.

“What are you still doing here? Doesn't your flight leave at noon?”
Owen looked up from his paperwork to see Derek approaching. “I'm going. Just finishing up.”
“We're going to be fine, you know,” Derek said, smiling. “You've got a good team here. No worries.”
“I know,” Owen replied. “I just like to leave things in good order. Kepner's got the ER well in hand and Avery will handle any administrative emergencies. The rest can wait.”
“Everything's squared away at home?” Derek continued.
“Yeah,” Owen said. “I think it's harder for me than for the kids. I've never been away from them for more than a few days.” He sighed. “They'll be fine. And my mom will be there.”
Derek leaned in closer and spoke in a conspiratorial whisper, “Do they know the real reason you're going to Switzerland?”
Owen was taken slightly aback, then realized that he shouldn't be surprised that Derek knew the truth behind the invitation to visit Cristina in Zurich, given the level of communication between Cristina and Meredith. “No, they don't. There's no reason to tell them any more at this point. It's premature. If this idea of Cristina's actually goes somewhere, I'll deal with it then. Nothing's changed yet.”
Derek nodded. “Makes sense. I assume that's the party line at the hospital, too?”
“What do you mean?” Owen asked quizzically, his brow furrowing.
Derek shrugged. “You know how people talk around here. The corridors are abuzz about you visiting Cristina...”
“How do they even know that's where I'm going?” Owen shook his head incredulously. “I've only told a handful of people on a need-to-know basis.”
“Doesn't matter,” Derek said, grinning. “News travels fast. Gossip even faster.”
“I give up,” Owen said, closing the file folder and putting it on the top of the pile. “Yes, please don't fuel the rumor mill. I'd like to keep this as private as I can. It's between Cristina and me. It's not anyone else's business. I've got to go. Call me if disaster strikes. Short of that, I'll see you when I get back.”
Derek extended his hand. “Have a good trip. Give Cristina my best.”
“Will do,” Owen said, shaking Derek's hand. “I've got a lot to sort out. Wish me luck.”

Cristina tapped on the window of Veronika's office. Veronika waved Cristina inside while continuing to speak on the phone in urgent tones. “I understand completely, but we still need the equipment. Dr. Yang is preparing to enter a new stage of her research very soon. The shipment needs to be expedited.” She looked at Cristina apologetically. “And who can help me with that?” She scribbled a name and phone number on her notes. “Thank you very much. I will be following up on this personally.” She hung up the phone. “Sorry about that. Things are never simple. Off to pick up Owen from the airport?”
Cristina nodded happily. “Yes. Just wanted to remind you that I'll be gone all afternoon. In fact, I'm not planning on showing my face here until Monday. Owen's going to be exhausted from all the traveling, not to mention jet-lagged. He'll need time to recover.”
“And you're just the person to take care of him,” Veronika said, smiling.
“I am,” Cristina replied. “Very, very good care of him. So are we still on for dinner on Saturday?”
“Indeed. Andreas and I are looking forward to it.” Veronika paused, then added mischievously, “Do I have to wait until then to meet the mysterious Dr. Hunt? I can hardly bear the anticipation.”
“Sorry,” Cristina said. “You'll have to wait. I've made plans.”
“Do they involve leaving your apartment?” Veronika teased.
Cristina laughed. “Not so much. You know me well. But I promise we'll show up to meet you.”
“I'll believe it when I see it,” Veronika said. “I will say, this man has a unique affect on you. Taking the afternoon off and no plans to come in to work over the weekend? That's a first.”
“If things work out the way I hope they will, I'm going to be taking a lot more time off. Get used to it!” Cristina said, grinning.
Veronika said nothing, but a smile hovered around the corners of her mouth.
“What?” Cristina demanded.
“I'm just glad to see you...broadening your horizons a bit,” Veronika said. “Enjoying a life with Owen, a life beyond medicine. Work will always be an important part of who you are. But it shouldn't be all that you are. I'm glad you can see that. I'm happy for you.”
Cristina shrugged. “Thanks. I'm happy for me, too. But I'll be even happier if Owen will agree to move to Switzerland. That's what this week is about. Showing him what life could be like for him here. For him and his family,” she added. “If it were just him, I'm almost sure he'd do it. But there are so many variables. His mom. The kids...”
“Be careful,” Veronika cautioned. “He needs to be able to explore all of this without pressure.”
“You're right,” Cristina said, sighing. “I just want it so much.” She glanced at her watch. “Gonna go.”
“Try to not to worry,” Veronika said, reassuringly. “Things have a way of working themselves out.”
“I hope so,” Cristina said. “I really, really hope so...”
oooOOOoooOOOoooOOOoooOOOoooOOOoooOOOooo
“Owen!”
Owen scanned the concourse, searching for Cristina, the large crowd of passengers and the people meeting them swirling around him in a sea of chattering chaos. He heard his name again, but couldn't locate her in the throng. Finally he caught a glimpse of black curls and worked his way through the crowd, excusing himself as he went. At last he saw her, her petite frame dwarfed by people towering over her, her eyes searching for him as he had been searching for her.
“Cristina! Over here!”
She broke into a grin as she made her way through a group of startled elderly tourists.
Owen set down his bags just in time to catch her as she leapt into his arms, kissing him passionately.
Finally coming up for air, she murmured, “Welcome to Switzerland...”
oooOOOoooOOOoooOOOoooOOOoooOOOoooOOOooo
“Here we are,” Cristina said, throwing open the door to her apartment. “What do you think?”
Owen set down his luggage and walked into the open space that served as living room, dining area, and kitchen. He immediately crossed the room and looked out the huge windows overlooking the city.
“What a view,” he said admiringly. “Zurich is gorgeous.” He turned around and surveyed the apartment itself which was done in a classically elegant style, simple yet warm. “I like the decorating.”
“My mother's handiwork,” Cristina said.
“You actually let your mother visit you?” Owen asked, surprised.
Cristina laughed. “I did. Mostly because I needed help with furnishings and décor,” she confessed.
Owen chuckled. “Well, it looks great. Surprisingly tidy...” he added with a wink.
“I'm not even going to pretend that's my doing,” Cristina said. “You obviously know better, having endured my habits for several years. I have a housekeeper who cleans, does my laundry and cooks.”
“The trifecta,” Owen said, smiling. “Sounds perfect for you.”
“Yep,” she confirmed. “Meals magically appear in my refrigerator. I just have to warm them up. Even I can manage that. Marta does all of the grocery shopping, too. It's heaven. So, the bathroom is just over there,” Cristina said with a wave of her hand, “and the bedroom is this way. Let me help you with that...”
Owen had picked up his things and was headed to the bedroom.
“I've got it. Thanks. What's the other room?” he asked. “Office?”
Cristina shook her head. “Guest room. But we won't be needing that,” she said pointedly.
“You'll share your bed with me?” Owen said innocently, setting down his luggage. He smiled when he saw the familiar purple duvet on the bed, pleased that she had kept it all this time.
“I will,” Cristina said, wrapping her arms around him. “I'm so glad you're here.” She suddenly realized that after five years of living in this place, Owen's presence made it feel like home at last.
“Me, too,” he said. He tilted her chin up and kissed her lips.
“You've got be tired and hungry,” Cristina said. “Marta made chicken soup and there's stuff for sandwiches. I wouldn't recommend sleeping yet. Or you'll never adjust to the new time zone.”
Owen nodded. “I agree. Lunch sounds great. And I could use a hot shower. Care to join me?” he added, planting a string of kisses on her neck.
She let out a murmur of contentment. “Works for me...”
“Good,” he said. His hands begin to roam her body. “So, a shower and lunch. Then I definitely think I need to go to bed.”
“No sleeping!” Cristina said, pulling him closer to her. “Jet lag!”
He gave her an impish grin. “Who said anything about sleep?”
oooOOOoooOOOoooOOOoooOOOoooOOOoooOOOooo
“So how are you enjoying Zurich so far? Did you explore the city today?” asked Veronika.
“I did,” Owen replied. “Very impressive. Cristina took me to lunch and we spent the afternoon just wandering around.” He wondered fleetingly if Veronika and Andreas had noticed how he had skipped right over the morning. And its decidedly amorous activities. He decided to avoid Cristina's eyes for the moment. “It's a charming city. I think I could grow to like it.” He gave Cristina's hand a squeeze under the table.
“You would prefer to live and work in Zurich, then, given the option?” Andreas inquired.
“Well, yes,” Owen said. “We'd be moving so I can be with Cristina. I'm not sure it makes sense to uproot my daughter's whole life if Cristina and I would be living in different cities.” He paused, having remembered that Andreas lived in Geneva while Veronika lived in Zurich. “If it were just me, it might be different, but it feels like a lot to ask of Tricia...”
Andreas nodded. “Completely understandable. Your circumstances are very different from ours. However, given that my base is in Geneva, that's where the majority of my contacts lie. In fact, I've taken the liberty of setting up some appointments for you on Monday with a few organizations. You're willing to take the meetings?”
“Of course,” Owen said. “I'm open to exploring any opportunities at this point. Thank you.”
“Very good,” Andreas said. “I return to Geneva tomorrow night. We'll travel together and you can stay with me. I've a spare room. Monday you will meet with The World Health Organization in the morning and with OCHA in the afternoon.” Turning to Cristina, Andreas added with a wink, “He'll be home in time for bed.”
Cristina rolled her eyes, but then asked, more seriously, “OCHA? I don't know it.”
“It's a branch of the United Nations,” Andreas said. “The Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs. They specialize in preparation and relief for disasters, both natural and man-made.”
Owen looked intrigued. “Sounds interesting.”
Andreas smiled. “I thought it might be, how do you say? Right 'up your alley'? And,” he added, almost as an afterthought, “I've just had an idea...an option for you right here in Zurich. I'll make some calls.”
“We really appreciate it, Andreas,” Cristina said. “Thanks so much.”
“It's my pleasure, of course,” Andreas replied. “Now do tell us, Owen, about your life in Seattle...”
oooOOOoooOOOoooOOOoooOOOoooOOOoooOOOooo
“So he's still in Geneva?” Meredith asked.
“Yes,” Cristina said. “It was only supposed to be for one night, but his meetings ran long, so he's taking the early train tomorrow morning.” She paused, then added, “They really like him.”
“I'm not surprised,” Meredith said. “He's excellent. Organizations will be fighting over him.”
“You think?” Cristina paused to take off her shoes before sinking down onto the couch. “I hope so. We're actually hoping that he can find something here in Zurich. Being in the same city would be nice.”
“Sure,” Meredith said, “but beggars can't be choosers. Do you have any leads in Zurich?”
“Actually, yes,” Cristina said. “Andreas knows so many people. He's gotten Owen a meeting at the University Hospital tomorrow afternoon. And they're excellent. One of the foremost treatment, teaching, and research centers in Europe.”
“Sounds promising,” Meredith said, then added, “I've gotta go. I'm being paged. Sorry.”
“Go,” Cristina said. “I'll keep you posted.”
oooOOOoooOOOoooOOOoooOOOoooOOOooo
“Pacing won't make him arrive any faster.”
Cristina whirled around to see Veronika standing in the office doorway, a wry expression on her face.
“I know,” Cristina said. “But he'll be here any minute. Nice of you to turn up.”
Veronika sighed. “You knew I had to be in Munich yesterday. I told you that. You don't pay attention.”
“I forgot,” Cristina admitted. “I just...wanted to know what you thought of Owen. It's been nearly three days. I'm dying here!” She closed the office door and beckoned Veronika to sit down.
Veronika smiled broadly. “What's to say? He's a delightful man. Very smart, very kind, funny...and he clearly adores you. More to the point, you're good together. I like him very much.”
Cristina feel a sense of relief wash over her. “Good. I thought you'd say that. But, I like hearing it anyway.”
Veronika looked confused. “Alright. But surely I'm only confirming what you already know.”
“Yes,” Cristina said. “But I value what you think. Your opinion matters to me. And you're bringing a fresh perspective. Because you didn't know us...before.”
Veronika nodded, finally understanding. “You've chosen well, Cristina. You're a good match. I don't know what you were like before. But I very much like what you are together now.” She tilted her head in thought and added, “You're different with him somehow. Not in a bad way,” she hastened to add, “You're still yourself, but...softer, maybe? I can't quite put my finger on it. But it's a good thing.”
Cristina smiled. “Thanks.”
There was a knock on the door and they both jumped, startled.
Cristina grinned. “Come in!”
“Cristina Yang. Director of Cardiothoracic Surgery,” Owen said. “Has a nice ring to it. Veronika,” he said, “Nice to see you again.”
“You as well,” Veronika said, rising from her chair. “I take it things went well in Geneva?”
“They did,” Owen said. “Andreas has been wonderful. I really can't thank him enough. Or you either.”
“I haven't done anything. It's all Andreas,” Veronika said.
“You've been a wonderful friend to Cristina all of these years,” Owen said. “That means more to me than I can say, the way you've looked out for her. Thank you.”
Veronika blushed a little. “Nonsense. We've looked out for each other.” But she looked pleased none-the-less. “I'm off. Good luck this afternoon.”
“Thanks,” Owen said.
When Veronika had left, Owen closed the door behind her and took Cristina in his arms.
“Hey...” he said, pulling her closer.
“Hey...” she replied. “I'm glad you're back”
“Me, too,” he said. “I've got a few hours before my meeting. Wanna grab some lunch?”
“Absolutely! But can I take you around the clinic for a little tour before we go? I want to show it off to you a bit,” she added proudly.
“Sounds good. This place is amazing. But first I need to greet you properly,” he said, pressing her back against the wall. He kissed her over and over again, his fingers running through her hair, as she gave a little moan of pleasure, and whispered in her ear in a husky voice, “I missed you. Tonight, I'll show you just how much...”
oooOOOooOOOOoooOOOoooOOOoooOOOooo
It was past eight o'clock that night before Cristina received what would be the last in a series of text updates Owen had sent her throughout the afternoon and evening.
'Finished here. Heading out. ETA 30 minutes'
Just before nine o'clock she finally heard a familiar knock. She opened the door to a weary Owen.
“Six hours?” Cristina said, incredulously, as he entered the apartment. “What on earth did you talk about for six hours?”
“You'd be surprised,” he said, kissing her lightly on the lips. “One thing just seemed to lead to another.” He strode towards the bathroom and spoke over his shoulder. “I'm starving. Please tell me Marta was here today.”
He emerged a few minutes later looking marginally refreshed and sat down at the table where Cristina had laid out a plate of roast beef, mashed potatoes and green beans, piping hot from the microwave.
“Thank you,” he said gratefully. “God bless Marta.”
Cristina handed him a glass of water then sat down beside him. “So? Tell me.”
“I'm sorry I'm so late, but it was worth my time. I've got two job offers,” he said between bites.
“Seriously?” Cristina asked, delighted.
Owen smiled. “Seriously.” He added with a wink, “Apparently I have a very valuable skill set.”
“Well, duh...” Cristina said, shaking her head. “You're the guy whose mere presence got Seattle Grace's Level One Trauma Certification reinstated! You always underestimate yourself.”
“I don't like to toot my own horn,” Owen said, modestly. “My mother always taught me that if you're good at what you do, people will notice.”
“And clearly they have. So c'mon! Spill. I need details!” Cristina prompted. “Job offer number one...”
“Is from the University Hospital. They want to hire me as a trauma surgeon. I'd be the new guy, so that would mean particularly long hours in the beginning. But it's right here in Zurich and they don't seem bothered in the least that I couldn't start until next summer.”
“That's because you're worth waiting for,” Cristina said proudly. “Do you think you'd miss not being the Chief?”
Owen shrugged. “You can't have everything. And there's room for advancement down the road. The department head is in his late fifties. He'll retire at some point. I can tell they're already eyeing me to take over running the ER, but I'm not really willing to consider that just yet. There will be plenty of time to take on more later, if that's what I want. I need time to get my feet wet...to be with you..to be Tricia's dad. I can't be gone all the time. They seem to get that. I've been assured that the crappy shifts will be kept to a minimum. My reward for the experience I'd be bringing to the department.”
“You like the hospital?” Cristina asked. “Because that's important.”
“I do,” Owen nodded. “The facility is first rate and I like the people very much. I could see myself working there.
“It sounds really good,” Cristina said, relieved. “And what's behind Door Number Two? Because I'm not sure how it could be a better option.”
“That's the interesting part,” Owen said. “I wouldn't have to choose. I could do both.”
Cristina arched an eyebrow. “Really?”
“Um, hmm. Andreas heard back from OCHA. They want to hire me, too. Not for the Geneva office,” he said hastily, seeing the look of confusion on Cristina's face. “I would be completely Zurich-based. They want to bring me in as a consultant of sorts. Dispatching me on an as-needed basis to spearhead disaster relief. Running complete operations. Real boots-on-the-ground type stuff.”
“Wow,” Cristina said. “I can tell you're interested.”
“I am. Remember in New York when you told me that a new job could pose new challenges? I think you're right. Both of these jobs could shake up my career in a good way. And I think I like it.”
“What does the University Hospital have to say about the OCHA offer?” Cristina inquired.
“Actually, they're very much in favor of it. My inference is that it would be quite a feather in their cap to have one of their surgeons running such a prestigious operation. They even want to partner with OCHA and send teams of students with me when I work in the field.”
Cristina paused and then asked, “Would this field work be dangerous?”
“No,” Owen said gently, understanding immediately. “Not particularly. I mean, there's risk in any situation, I suppose, but no overt danger. I'd already insisted on a 'no war zones' clause, given my history, and that would carry over to the students and the university, too.”
Cristina felt herself exhale. “That's good.”
“Not just good. Non-negotiable,” he added, giving Cristina's hands a squeeze, “I don't want my family worrying that I'm going to be killed every time I go out on assignment.”
“That's pretty important to me, too,” Cristina said quietly, looking him right in the eyes.
“I know it is,” Owen said. “And I was including you when I referred to my family.”
Cristina's eyes welled up. “Really?”
“Really,” he said, cupping her chin with his hand. “You have always been my family. I love you.”
“I love you, too,” she said, kissing him on the lips. “Hey...do you think I could maybe come with you sometimes when you go to the field? It might be kind of fun.”
Owen smiled. “Two badass doctors saving the world together?”
Cristina laughed. “Something like that.”
“I think that sounds pretty great,” Owen said.
“So...you want to move to Zurich?” Cristina paused hopefully.
“I do,” Owen said carefully. “And in the end, it's my decision. I'm the grown up. I'm the parent. But what the kids think does matter. Especially Tricia. So I've got to go home and talk to her.”
“Yeah,” Cristina said quietly. “I know. And I respect that.”
“I know you do,” Owen said. “Thank you.”
“For what?” Cristina said, brushing off his words. “She's your daughter.”
“For understanding. And for being...you.” He pushed his plate away and added, “So we've got three days left. What's on the agenda?”
“Actually, I have a surprise for you,” Cristina said, a Cheshire Cat grin taking over her face.
“Should I be afraid?” Owen deadpanned.
Cristina laughed. “Maybe. Veronika and Andreas are letting us use their country house for a few days. I've been there and, to be honest, it's to die for. You just lay around and forget about the world.”
“That,” Owen said, smiling, “sounds absolutely wonderful. When do we leave?”
“First thing tomorrow,” she said, making a lateral move and straddling him in his chair. “There's not much to do though. However will we pass the time?” she added mischievously.
“I imagine we'll think of something,” Owen said, pulling her closer to him. “Speaking of which, I seem to recall offering to show you how much I missed you while I was in Geneva these last few nights...”
“You, did,” Cristina agreed. “But you're so tired. I won't hold you to it if you're not up to it.”
“That's thoughtful.” Owen's eyes were heady with desire. “But I'm definitely,” he leaned over and whispered in her ear, “up to it.”
oooOOOoooOOOoooOOOoooOOOoooOOOoooOOOoooOOOooo
The sun streamed through the sheer curtains in Cristina's bedroom, bathing her and Owen in light.
“I can't believe you're leaving today,” Cristina said, her head on Owen's chest.
“I know. The time went fast,” Owen said, stroking her hair. “But if things go well, I'll be moving here and we'll be together again. Forever this time.”
Cristina nodded. “I know. I just don't want to get my hopes up.”
Owen sighed. “And that's...wise. It's not for sure yet, but I have a good feeling about it all.”
Cristina looked up at him, her brown eyes gazing into his blue. “Okay. Then I'll hold on to that.”
Owen turned slightly, balancing on his elbow. “I do need to talk to you about something,” he said.
He paused as Cristina rearranged herself to look at him more easily. “Okay,” she said, warily. “Sounds kind of serious.”
Owen considered his words carefully. “Not serious, exactly. But important. We haven't talked at all about where Tricia and I would live if we move here. Now that I have job offers, that's more than a hypothetical question. And I need to know what you think.”
Cristina hesitated then said, “I have thought about it. But you'd be the one moving, so you go first.”
“Okay,” Owen said. He took a deep breath. “I think that Tricia and I should have our own place. At least for the next few years while she's still living at home. Nearby. Maybe even in this building or in that apartment house across the street? It would be a lot of change for her. Leaving Seattle. Moving to Zurich. I just think we need to take things one step at a time. It's going to be hard for Tricia when Kyle moves away. She's never been without him. This would keep things more like what she's used to, living just with me and Smitty. And I know that you like Tricia. And that you want to get to know her better. But I suspect that you don't want to live with her. It would blur the lines too much.”
“Oh god,” Cristina exhaled, visibly relieved. “I'm so glad you feel that way. I completely agree. We'd still have lots of time together. And in a few years? After Tricia graduates and goes off to college? Maybe we can consider getting a place together then.”
“Yeah,” Owen said. “And maybe we can even think about getting married again eventually?” His eyes were full of love and hope. “I don't ever want to pressure you, but...I think I would like that one day.”
“I think I would, too,” Cristina said, her eyes glowing. “Part of me misses being your wife.”
“In my heart you are still and will always be my wife,” Owen said, running his finger down her cheek. “But I like knowing that we plan to make it official again at some point.”
“Me, too,” Cristina said happily. She turned to look at the clock. “We've got six hours until your plane leaves,” she said. “How do you want to spend your last morning in Zurich?”
“Do you really have to ask?” he said, teasingly, as he pulled her close and started to nuzzle her neck.
“I was hoping you'd say that,” Cristina said, with a sultry tone.
Grinning, Owen flipped Cristina onto her back and began to kiss her over and over again, his large, muscular body dwarfing her tiny frame. Their kisses became more and more intense as their hands wandered with abandon, the heat between them rising as their mood shifted from playful to passionate, until they both moaned in pleasure, each of them savoring these last moments together before they parted again
