He sat, the cane against his thigh, and contemplated the plateau before him.

The shuffling bodies of men and women of all races, creeds, and nationality. Death was the true melting pot -- everybody died, after all. Not everybody lived, though, and this place was the sterile, unpleasant truth of it.

Idly wondering if this was the makeup test version of life -- he hadn't failed, but he hadn't passed, either, that test he had once abhored the thought of -- and found the ruminations gave him no comfort.

So instead, he reached out; his hand found the checkerboard on the end table next to him and he moved a piece, before he went back to his people watching, blue eyes dispassionate.
