(
The Dance Complex is the awesome non-profit where I take dance classes, in Central Square.)
1. They're filming a dreadful-looking movie there:
Bride Wars, starring Kate Hudson, Anne Hathaway, and Candice Bergen. "Two best friends become rivals when they schedule their respective weddings on the same day," according to IMDB. Ugh.
I know this because they bumped my dance class out of our usual studio into an upstairs one, which has secret wall panels and other odd fixtures (as does the whole building), prompting us to ask...
2. "What was this building originally?" According to our teacher, who runs the Complex, it started out as an Oddfellows hall (which made me think of the REM song "Oddfellows Local 151"; my teacher described the Oddfellows as "blue-collar Masons"). Then it became a disco, then a gym, and then the Dance Complex moved in 15 years ago.
Also according to my teacher, it's the tallest turn-of-the-century building in Central Square, because during the Depression people had to pay more insurance (and probably more taxes) on taller buildings, so they lopped off the top floor or two! So the Dance Complex is still your standard 4-story pre-steel structure, but the other older buildings are shorter than they used to be.
