The Dearest Darlings
The Darling children of the Darling household are not fond of retaining their composure at bedtime. On this particular night (as seems to happen over and over...) redheaded Michael Darling's gleeful shouts of "I won't go to bed, I won't, I won't!" echo throughout the room, and he comes perilously close to tripping over his own feet. Regardless, Mr and Mrs Darling seem to remain rather cheerful. In particular, Mr Darling constantly appears to be barely concealing a sense of impish delight.
He stomps into the nursery, his tie hanging loosely around his neck.
"What is the matter, father dear?" A certain something in Mrs Darling's voice hints at long-suffering, although her face bears a wholly pleasant expression.
"This tie!" he cries. "It will not tie! Twenty times I have made it up round the bedpost, but round my neck, no!"
On paper, his words seem defeated and frustrated. However, they are accompanied by an unmistakably wicked gleam in his eye.
"Let me try, dear." Mrs Darling neatly ties her husband's tie, valiantly ignoring Tiger Lily's not-quite-smothered giggles. As their evening progresses, husband and wife sing to their Darling children and make preparations to leave. They exit the nursery, and-
"Okay, stop there!" shouts Mr Cheney. "Stacey, you deliver your lines well, but that won't matter if no-one can hear you. Project! Jackie, if you fall during a performance, pretend it's part of the show. But try not to. Right, from the beginning, everyone! Let's go!"
The actors scatter towards their starting places, their movements betraying various levels of exhaustion.
"You did marvelously, my Darling." Sam grins, and offers Stacey his elbow. "Would you like me to escort you to the wings?"
Stacey grimaces. "No thanks, Sam. I'm fine."
